Book Reviews of The City of Ember (Books of Ember)Book Review: A Great Start To A Fantastic Series Summary: 5 Stars
This is the type of book that gets you hooked. You start reading and are enjoying it, but then the more you read the better it gets, the more you like it, you feel involved in the drama and action and want to help the characters, help them solve the mysteries and problems. I highly reccommend this book. It has an air of mystery and intrigue about it that fills you with curiosity for what will happen next. The author can perfectly relate to you the characters thoughts and feelings and not one emotion is out of place. The novel is not highly predictable so you don't feel like it's a waste of time to finish. This book has light humor in it and would be good for kids aged 8-12. It will even satisfy fantasy and sci-fi lovers alike. Not at all confusing, expertly written and worthy of five stars.
Book Review: No logic Summary: 2 Stars
As I was reading this novel it bothered me that the author did not explain why there were no books on Physics or Electricity and Magnetism to explain how the world works. How could a society build an underground city yet fail to provide the future citizens with any means to educate themselves. This book reminds me of "Orphans of the Sky" By Robert A. Heinlein. A much better book with a great explanation why all the knowledge was lost. A true science fiction book that respects its audience gives plausible well thought out scenarios that can be believed. This book fails to do that. Come on, the workings of a direct current electrical generator can be understood by a grade school child. I cant believe a society that relies on one for their survival could "forget" how they work.
Book Review: City of Ember at a cafe in my mind Summary: 4 Stars
I found this book to be quite an easy read. Keep in mind, the audience this book is aimed towards is kids though. The pictures were great, since I never watched any trailers for the movie, to fill my mind with images of the characters acting out the scenes before my very eyes. This is a great book to read with your children. Jeanne Duprau writes in such a way that allows any aged reader escape into this fictional broken down town. The immediate twist reminds me of Harry Potter when I was only a little one. Since Harry Potter came out when I was in 1st grade, I had a similar experience with that book that i did with this one. Now with this, 13 years of experience and troubles allowed me to relax more to enjoy this wonderful book. I cant wait to read the next few.
Book Review: Started Slow and Finally Picked up Halfway Through Summary: 3 Stars
I have wanted to read this book for years. I've picked it up in the stores and thought it was interesting. Finally I purchased it (Kindle edition) and started to read it about three different times. I couldn't get interested in it in the beginning. Finally I stuck with it the fourth time, and eventually around halfway through it picked up and became an enjoyable read for me. I'm an adult reader who loves the YA genre, so I was surprised that it took awhile for the book to start for me. The journey of Lina, Doon and Poppy leads you to immediately want to grab the 2nd book and continue the story to find out what happens next. I do not regret reading the book, if you are having a difficult time getting through the beginning, like me, continue on! It's worth it!
Book Review: near perfect YA novel Summary: 5 Stars
'The City of Ember' by Jeanne DuPrau is an excellent young adult novel that had me hooked within the first page. The 'Builders' have built a city for a number of people to survive some unnamed catastrophe in safety, however since it won't be safe to leave the city for at least 200 years, they have deliberately made it difficult for anyone to leave. Instructions on how to leave were entrusted to the first mayor but over time the instructions have become lost and as the story opens 240 years and the city is beginning to fall into ruin and decay...
The story reminded me of Arthur C Clarke's 'The City and the Stars' about a city whose inhabitants have long ago lost any knowledge of the outside world, and a young teen who discovers a way out.
