Book Reviews of The City of Ember (Books of Ember)Book Review: Good Debut Summary: 3 Stars
Negatives: Some of the world-building and plotting here is not quite believable. The characters frequently make accurate guesses at things; on one hand the author does a lot of explaining to show how things are realistic, but on the other hand she skirts away from lots of important details, like oxygen and physical environment in Ember; lots of coincidences fill in where the plotting seems to have been botched.
Positives: Interesting characters, good pacing for the most part, lots of unique ideas tied together fairly well. The book has a good start and a good finish, with only a few real fumbles along the way.
Overall: A cool, interesting read, with lots of good ideas and lots of good execution. A solid 3.5 Stars.
Book Review: Entertaining, and a great book for young readers. Summary: 4 Stars
I actually really enjoyed this book! It was a quick and easy read, only taking me an afternoon to read it, but it was also very interesting! Lina and Doon are two twelve year olds beginning their new lives among the workforce of the city of Ember. But things aren't going well for the city. The lights that keep the darkness at bay have begun to run down, food and clothing are short, but there is no way to leave the city, or any knowledge of anything beyond the dark unknowns. Lina and Doon begin to unlock the mystery left behind by the Builders, the creators of their city two hundred years ago. This is definitely a book my kids would like, and it is refreshingly clean without unnecessary language or innuendos
Book Review: the city of ember book reveiw from az. Summary: 5 Stars
The problem is the city of ember is breaaking apart and it is very, very dark. They need to find a solution to fix the city. The journey starts at the generator.
Lina and Doon are the main charaters. Lina has a little sister named Poppy and Doon has a dad. Lina's mom and dad died. Now she has her grandma, granny.
I liked the book because it was very adventureous. The author has great word choice that decribes the charaters well and also how brave the charaters are.
Someone should read this book because it brings you through an adventure. It feels like your going in the story. I give the book five stars. Read to find out more adventureous secrets!
Book Review: A Good Way to Connect Summary: 5 Stars
Initially I decided to purchase the series because I am a substitute teacher and I would go in to special reading classes for a few days and the students would be reading this series, book by book. I would get very interested and then my time would be up and I wouldn't have gotten to read all of any of the books. I decided to buy the series and then, as I read each book, send it to my new 5th grade step-grandson. I am hoping this will provide an extra opportunity for us to bond! He has The City of Ember (he is excited to read a book that will be a movie) and I am now ready to send The People of Sparks. I am REALLY enjoying these books on so many levels. What a great message they are sending!
Book Review: Raced through it Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book because I remembered an excerpt from a story in my 8th grade reading book that had an underground city like Ember. This isn't the same story, but I love the concept. I bought it about 8pm or so, and I finished it around 1130pm the same night. (reading on my netbook, no less. lol) I immediately had to buy the next book in the series.
I'm assuming this is a YA book, but it's so nice to find one where the characters aren't sarcastic and annoying. As someone who usually avoids the YA genre, this was a wonderful read. I loved the premise and the execution didn't disappoint. I feel like I was down in Ember, I could see it so clearly in my head.
