Book Review: ALMOST WORTHLESS

I bought this book for three reasons. The first reason was based upon the description of the book as a "complete" guide for beginners. I consider myself familiar with the subject of beekeeping because I have been doing some internet research into the subject in preparation of starting my first hive. Since I do not yet own a hive, I would not even call myself a "novice". Even so, I had not yet completed the fourth chapter when I realized this book was FAR from a complete guide to the subject. THERE IS NOT A SINGLE ILLUSTRATION OF ANYTHING ANYWHERE IN THIS BOOK! Not one. I expected the author to provide SOMETHING more than written descriptions of bee anatomy, hive construction, bee keeping tools, accessories, proper hive access...but all he provides is a basic (if not pedestrian) written account of these items.
The second reason I bought this book was how thoroughly the product description seemed to address the subject matter in "steps". I thought I would be learning about the basics and then building upon that knowledge in a carefully incremental fashion. However, the book is written in such a "stream of conciousness" sort of way that the author mentions tools, and hive parts without ever introducing them. Words like "super" are discussed without ever providing explanations for what they are. It was difficult to proceed without looking for more definitions from the internet. When something is explained, it is done in a very disjointed way. The author is constantly mentioning a subject or process and then telling you he will explain that item further in a later chapter. The information does not flow naturally and allow the reader to build their knowledge base in a comprehenisble way.
The third reason I was interested in this title was that I had hoped to learn enough to start a hive and then eventually consider a business. What a joke. After reading this book, the only thing I am absolutely sure of is that I need to start over with another book about beekeeping.
This book was written at what I would consider a third-grade level. The authors command of the written language is not adequate for the reader to feel satisfied they understand the subject matter as described. The further I read into the text, the more I felt like I had been duped into buying a book written on a home-computer and published in the garage of an amature bee-keeper. I found SO MUCH MORE information on the web for free!!! The author could have learned everything he included in the book from one hour on Wikipedia!
John Drake has absolutely NO business selling this book as a The Complete Book of Beekeeping. This book should be titled "A Complete Waste if Time and Money." Thanks, John.
