Book Reviews of The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home RemediesBook Review: not what I expected Summary: 5 Stars
I am giving this five stars because I don't wish to penalize it just because it wasn't suitable for me.But, anyone purchasing this book should learn a little first about Ayuravedic medicine. Basically, you first determine your constitutional type (vata, pitta or kapha) by filling out a chart that questions you about such unexpected characteristics as nose shape, financial habits and shape of your belly button. According to this book, your constitutional type is determined by several factors including genetics, diet and emotional state of your parents at the time of your conception, and even what the weather was like during your conception. After you know your constitutional type, you are next supposed to do things that allow you to be in harmony with it, to pacify it, and not to aggravate it. This was all too unconventional and unscientific for me, personally. I find it difficult to believe that the sperm and egg that came together to form me were so greatly affected by the above factors at the moment of conception. I prefer remedies that have been scientifically proven to work, but this type of medicine does not follow this approach at all. For example, I own the "Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine," and that book makes more sense to me because the recommendations are supported by scientific studies. This is not to say that this is quack medicine, but simply to say that for me, personally, the reasoning behind this approach was not believable. If your cultural background is different from mine, this book may make more sense to you.
