Book Reviews of The Cure: Heal Your Body, Save Your Life

Book Review: So-so
Summary: 3 Stars

I won this book at a health fair a few years ago. I forgot I had it until I was looking for a different book on my shelves a few weeks ago. I started reading it, thinking "what the heck?".

I agree with many other reviewers, who say the book is an advertisement for his products, but I get ahead of my self. The first part of the book hooks you, making you think, "WOW! Results like this are possible?" so you keep reading thinking he will tell you later in the book how it is all possible.

The second half of the book goes through the "procedures" to start you on the path to wellness... I kept reading thinking ok, if he really wants everyone to "get better" he'll tell us how to make our own "herbal remedies". No such luck, he only says, see my web site to order the herbal remedies. His excuse is that he's done so much in depth research, and uses "the highest quality" herbs, so the average person could couldn't possibly reproduce the high quality results from his herbs.

I do agree with alot of his information. Eating has become hazardous to the health of the average american. Processed and refined foods, fast food and a generally toxic food environment has lead americans down the path of ill health. I also agree that our diets should be made up of more "whole" foods and we should try to eliminate processed foods. I don't necessarily agree with his outlook on meats... He recommends only eating fish and beef (organic or wild caught of course) and cooking them as little as possible. I love fish, but living in Colorado it is difficult to find high quality fish that I could eat raw (basically) unless I want to pay upwards of $20+ per pound. Imigine if everyone in america began consuming raw fish, what do you think this would do to the fish population?

My overall take on this book is that there are a lot of ideas that I will take from it to help improve my health, but in all likely hood I will not follow his "cure" to the letter, and I certianly will not buy his "herbal remedies". If you are interested in this book, try to find it in your library or a used online bookstore, I wouldn't pay full price for it.

Book Review: An Informercial for his products
Summary: 2 Stars

Let me save you the money of buying this book. It's basically an infomercial for Dr. Brantley's products. At first, the book will pull you in. I literally couldn't put it down because I was fascinated by the countless stories of people who were getting sick on the standard American diet and were cured by Dr. Brantley's experiments. The book seems to be written by a ghost writer, as the style seems very familiar...

While I do believe in what his general message is - the standard American diet is what is making us sick and the medical industry is big business - this is all old hat.

What the book recommends is that you basically eat nothing but raw organic foods, take herbal supplements, and detox (this colonics or enemas). Again, old hat. Better yet, you need to buy all of his products in order to do so.

While I agreed with the author's message, he didn't provide enough tools in the end to achieve these goals. The book is 90% compelling story with 10% advice and advertisements.

When you get real information about how to improve your health, you will find at least 50% of the book dedicated to giving you step by step guidelines. Take any of the books by Dr. McDougall and his program. Or Dr. Dean Ornish. Or Dr. Andrew Weil. They explains with science why the standard american diet is killing us. The remaining half of their books contain detailed steps and recipes to heal your body.

Whereas, with The Cure, you are given a very small handful of recipes and advice to "Check out my website" to learn more. Kevin Trudeau does similar things. Also, it really bothered me that the book never gets into the part where Dr. Brantley becomes a doctor. It seems that he just "went to college", but it never mentions how he studied health and became a doctor.

However, there is science in these books. Brantley refers to countless experts who have done their research and filled their books with facts. But in Brantley's case, he only refers to these "studies" or "findings" if only to support his stories.

Save your money and buy a raw foods "cookbook". Detox your body. And feel better.

Book Review: He isn't a real doctor, the cover lies about that
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased the book because I was interested in trying raw food for better health but the raw food movement seems filled with quacks making flagrantly dishonest and false claims and this book advertised it was written by a real doctor (see the cover, it's in big print). Turns out the author is a naturopath, not a real doctor. Of course it matters that it wasn't written by someone who went to medical school but instead got his degree in adjusting energy fields and channeling the healing wisdom of spirits from atlantis. The ONLY thing which made this worth buying was this guy supposedly had medical training and was qualified to evaluate medical claims. Instead he lies about his credentials right on the cover and for good reason - Because he isn't on the team that cares about the truth or what really works. I am not sure what to do with the book when it arrives. Hopefully it has some recipes for edible food otherwise I got completely ripped off.

Update: The book was worse than I could have imagined. The only "research" backing up his claims used applied kinesiology which is no more accurate or scientific than reading soul auras. From reviewing the available books on Amazon it seems the entire raw foods movement consists of nothing but naturopathic scam artists. If there was something to any of the health claims being made there would be at least one rational source publishing a popular book backing some of the claims but I can't find even one. Until one person who isn't a new age con artist can step forward with believable reasons for why a raw food diet is healthy enough to give up good tasting food I'll lump these health claims in with those of wearing a pyramid on your head.

Book Review: A horrible book in so many ways
Summary: 1 Stars

Where to begin on such a misleading, awful book, which will inspire people to undertake ridiculous and difficult diets?

Due to bad experiences with doctors over 30 years ago, the author has a major beef with mainstream medicine. He throws the baby out with the bathwater. He makes good points, like diet being important, which all doctors recognize now. Strangely enough, he says almost NOTHING about exercise. Two reasons, one -- he hates to exercise, as admitted on his blog, which is nothing more than a giant advertisement for his dubious products. Second, he can't sell exercise.

The book is a long advertisement for his totally unproven products.

He's sceptical of anything to do with biomedicine, and yet he swallows any claim at all, as long as it comes from alternative medicine. He advocates for "muscle testing" which is a total sham. Google it if you're interested. Just about everything claimed in this book lacks any kind of research background. It's all based on anecdotes from Hollywood folks. On top of that, the diet is very strict and will make your life miserable.

I paid $4 for the book, and feel I wasted my money. Save yours.
