Book Reviews of The Dark Tower Boxed Set (Books 1-4)Book Review: Great book so far Summary: 5 Stars
I'm about half way through the third book in the series and I must say that I'm very impressed with the story King has put together thus far. Like a combination of a western and the matrix, he keeps things interesting with action and suspense.
Only once has he gone into 'scary monster' territory so far (like the other books of his that I have read) and I'm thankful for that. The book is much more effective when he sticks to psychological suspense as opposed to 'running from the monster'. Perhaps this will change as I get further into the series as they were written over a period of 20 or so years and his writing style and choice of themes may have changed over time as well.
Overall, I'm really enjoying the story and am very pleased with the purchase. Great read if you are into sci-fi/indiana jones/western type stuff.
Book Review: Truly a masterpiece. Summary: 5 Stars
Some may argue Stephen King's style is simplistic, but I would argue back that sometimes what's on the surface isn't always the entire picture. I'm currently on the fifth book of the series (not in this collection) and must say that each book has kept me excited and tied to the characters. I actually want to know the outcome, not just get through the book.
To think a series started with the simplest line, "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." I had heard about the Dark Tower series but never paid it any mind, until I realized one of my favorite bands, Blind Guardian, had a bunch of songs about the series, and it interested me. So here I am now - a fan of the series and eagerly waiting to catch the man in black myself.
Definitely recommended if you want an epic read.
Book Review: I can't believe it took me so long! Summary: 5 Stars
I used to be an avid S.K. fan, then my interest was caught by other writers. Years went by, and one day I was looking for a collection of short stories to help me while away time while recovering from surgery.
I read Everything's Eventual, and again was captured by King's style and imagination. One short story, "The Little Sisters of Eluria", introduced me to Roland of Gilead for the first time. It piqued my interest, and as I read more about The Dark Tower Series, I knew that I Had to read it.
I have loved this epic adventure, devouring adventure after adventure, book after book. At this point, I have (sadly) begun the seventh and last book, and hate to have it end.
I can't believe it took so long for me to find this seried of novels. I'm so glad I finally did.
Book Review: One Word - Phenomenal Summary: 5 Stars
This series of books is beyond words. For those looking for something like The Lord of the Rings, this is it. The only difference is that there is nothing that you can call puny in these books.
I have struggled to accurately display the story of Roland Deschain, son of steven, last gunslinger of gilead and his dark tower, yet I know of no diction to properly describe it. The closest I can come is to comparing it to a cross between a western (the gunslinger), The Lord of the Rings (magic, and other worldly happenings), and Band of Brothers (weapons, battles, bonding to the point of family). To me, it is the best literary work that ive laid eyes on. I will read this set of books till I have to breath left to spin.
Book Review: King's finest . . . Summary: 5 Stars
While I am not really a fantasy or a science fiction fan, and the Dark Tower series seems to take elements of each of these (and several others), I cherish these first four books in the series. While the Dark Tower series is hard to describe, it is easy to read. The first four books in the series are some of my favorite books of all time. I have reread each several times (something I rarely do with any book). Book five is good, just not up to the high standards of one through four. Books six and seven were the largest disappointments, to me, of any author's work. None of this, though, can take away the magic of books one through four. I can safely recommend these books to you, almost no matter what type of books you usually like.
