Book Review: Poignant and dramatic

My son is 8 now, and reading together before his bedtime has been a long tradition in our family, starting when he was only a year old. We've read all the books of the first series together and are now starting "Firestar's Quest" before moving on to The New Prophecy.
SPOILER ALERT
Of all the books of the first series, this one was the most touching and heartfelt. At the beginning of the book, the chapter where Firestar is at the Moonstone receiving his nine lives from Star Clan, was so touching and poignant it was overwhelming. I've never been one to cry over things like this, but while reading to my son I had to stop and compose myself each and every time Firestar received one of his nine lives from the cats who were his mentors and friends before they went to Star clan. If I hadn't I couldn't have kept on reading, I would have been overwhelmed with the emotion contained in that chapter, as Firestar realizes just how strongly his passed friends and mentors care for and believe in him.
I was also touched and moved at the end of the book when Whitestorm goes to hunt with Star Clan during the battle with Blood Clan for the forest... his loss was absolutely tragic because of the friendship that had grown between him and Firestar over the course of the last two books. In many ways, Firestar lost more than just a friend, more than a mentor, he lost someone who was like a father to him.

The chapter where Firestar receives his nine lives epitomizes the recurring theme in all these books; the struggle to find yourself and make your way in the world, to be accepted, to do what's right deep-down even though it means doing something that superficially seems wrong. I think younger teenage readers in particular will identify with the doubts and uncertainties, and the trials and tribulations Firestar goes through in his life in the Clan. In Warriors, Firestar's journey is the one we all make in our lives, to find our way through the world and make a place for ourselves. Some of us aren't as successful with that as others, but we all do it, and in Warriors, we each can find a little of ourselves in Firestar's struggles and his successes show us the rewards of trying to be the best person you can be.
Overall, an excellent series of books that will appeal to young and old alike. I'm 44 and I love reading them, and look forward to reading them with my son every night. I enjoy it not just because of the good times I have with my son doing so, but also because I enjoy following along with Firestar, sharing his trials and successes, and finding out what happens next among the clans in the forest they call home.
A truly excellent series of books.
