Book Reviews of The Devil's Punchbowl: A Novel

Book Review: Mr. Iles is a master
Summary: 5 Stars

I like Greg Iles and enjoy his books. Since I read a book a day when I get my hands on a book like his I tend to slow down and savor and enjoy a good treat. He is a masterful author who has again proven that he has multiple good books in him and more yet to come. This novel is well plotted, devious, characters are well developed, they come to life in your imagination and stay in your mind after the novel is finished. I am not going to give you a synoposis of the story, I am sure at least 50 people have done so already, but this is a book worth reading. I suggest take a weekend and enjoy.

Book Review: Iles' last two books have been Bad!
Summary: 1 Stars

I picked up The Devil's Punchbowl at the library-had it reserved for months and was hoping it would be better than Third Degree. However it is so boring and tedious that I stopped reading at page 100. I don't care what is going on at the Magnolia Casino-or who is the head of the ring stealing tax money or running the dog fighting , nor the underage prostitution because the book is so tedious. I won't even skip to the end-will just return it to the library and let the next person who has it on hold have the pleasure or agony of trying to get through this book.

Book Review: 3.5 Good Book, But Too Long!
Summary: 3 Stars

This was a pretty good book. It has an all inclusive plot: murder, polictical scams, rape, dog fighting, suspense, gambling, prostitution, etc. I don't think Iles left anything out.

However, this book was nearly 600 pages. There was way too much tedious detail. It was distracting from the story. I think this would have a better book at around 300 pages.

Book is worth reading, but I wouldn't pay for it. I read a library copy. Some people will probably take offense to the extreme violence. Be warned if you are going to read.

Book Review: suspenseful, deep and made my skin crawl!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was fantastic. I have to admit that parts of it made me sick, but it was a very, very good book. I have read all of Greg Iles's books and have loved every one of them. None of them made me as mad as this one did. You totally get lost in the story and feel for the people, that is what makes a good author. I read other people's reviews, some said the book offened them, I think this was an eye opener as we all know this type of thing goes on way more than anyone would like, if only we could have a Penn Cage every where to take out the bad guys!

Book Review: Iles writing style in Devil's Punchbowl turns me off
Summary: 2 Stars

Greg Iles is one of my favorite authors. The book reviews for this book seemed to indicate that the book was going to be really good. However, this book is written in the first person, such as "I did this", "I did that", and for some reason this style of writing in this novel really turned me off. I read the first few pages, but just could not take the "I ..." style of writing. I didn't even get past page 3. Just too egotistical in the first person. Too bad Iles chose the first person to share with us the thoughts of the the hero in the book.
