Book Reviews of The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3

Book Review: Detailed and entertaining
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the third book in Scott Kelby's digital photography series, picking up where volume 1 and 2 left off. All three volumes are packed with information that would be helpful to any photographer, whether a novice or pro. His writing is not so deep that one gets lost in the explanations he is giving.

This book (as well as the other two volumes)is broken down into many single page, easy-to-follow instructions on many photographic situations that the photographer will find himself/herself in as well as covering various camera settings (primarily on Nikon and Canon cameras).

The author's brand of humor may not appeal to all but helps keep the book lively, entertaining and easy to read.

Scott provides links in the book to his web site where video clips of the various subjects can be viewed, which is a plus!

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in digital SLR photography.

Book Review: Kelby almost does it again....
Summary: 4 Stars

I just finished reading the 3rd book in "The Digital Photography" series and overall got some great tips from it. Being a new photographer there is some great useful information, but I am sure that some of the tips will go unused by more seasoned photographers.
The chapter on lenses was great since I was looking to add some new glass and wasn't sure what to add next. I ended up buying 2 more lenses to round out my equipment.
But as good as this book is, there are some minor flaws. Some of the content is repetitive if you read books 1 and 2 as I did. If you haven't, then you miss some of the tips that are needed to get you up to speed.
Overall it is a good book to add to your photography library, but I would recommend reading the 1st 2 books first or buying the 3 book set.

Book Review: too simplistic
Summary: 2 Stars

I passed on the first two volumes, as good as they might have been, because I considered them too basic, but figured I would give the 3rd book a chance. Well, it too is pretty darn simplistic; and I returned my copy.

Very light reading, considering this is the 3rd in the series, and many items could be learned by simply reading the manual that came with your camera; like how to power down your flash via the flash exposure comp button. How about the page devoted to carrying a back-up flash on a pro shoot. Really?

I like Scott's software books, his blog, and these books may be great for the beginner but if you have at least some experience I suggest saving your money. Take a look at the books by Kirk Tuck for starters.

Book Review: Good, quick read
Summary: 4 Stars

I have several of Kelby's books related to Photoshop, so I decided to try one of his other books. Notwithstanding his lame jokes (I would love to meet someone that really thinks he's funny. What could they be like?) and religious incantations that he always sticks in his preface, this is a fun book to read and you can pick up some info that I've never seen anywhere else. He devotes one page for each item, so you can pick it up anytime and focus on it with ease. I liked it and will probably check out his second book in this series.

So, if you want a quick read that you can pick up anytime (during football halftime)to learn some new things and confirm things you already know, this is a good choice. It's easy and fun. God bless!

Book Review: Scott Kelby Does it Again.
Summary: 4 Stars

I think every budding photographer should get all three books. But you should know that when you read them, you will want to buy more photography gear, so get your wallets out! He writes in such a simple style and his content is solid. When you read his books (and this one is no exception), it's like you are being taught by a close friend. He tells you exactly what you should do if you don't know and will even recommend specific products and tell you why he recommends them. This has helped me buy great gear the first time without a huge learning curve and wasting money on junk.

Again, you should get this book. And you should look at joining the NAPP to get discounts on his other products, services and partner products.
