Book Reviews of The Distant Land of My FatherBook Review: WHY ISN'T THIS BOOK BETTER KNOWN? Summary: 5 Stars
This book is wonderful and unique, it is hard to believe it is fiction - Bo Caldwell has us seeing, feeling and smelling Shanghai and Southern California in the 40's and 50's. This book should be made into a movie - at the very least it should have been a number one bestseller for weeks on end. Everyone I have recommended it to has been blown away. I am looking forward to her next effort.
Book Review: Wonderful Book Summary: 5 Stars
This book was lent to me by a friend. Because I loved it so much and was sorry to see it end, I am ordering my own copy so I can read it again. I will recommend it highly to my friends and know that it is a perfect gift to give. An absolute gem of a book. I don't undersand why this book didn't get more attention. I anxiously await Bo Caldwell's next book.
Book Review: Interesting book Summary: 4 Stars
Bo Caldwell did her homework on this fictional account of life in Southern California and Shanghai (before and after the Communists took over.)
She has the feel of Shanghai, the luxury and then the poverty of her father. She has the time frame correct in Southern California, the music
and the movies. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.
Book Review: Wonderful! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is beautifully written. I can't remember when I have been so mesmerized by the language, the beautiful visual descriptions, and the way in which characters are brought to life by gently folding back the layers of their souls until you feel you have actually been in their skin. An absolutely great read that should not be passed up.
Book Review: I Cannot Recommend This Book Enough! Summary: 5 Stars
My favorite of all my 2008 reads so far! The history of Shanghai and Pasadena at this time is so well crafted with WW2 coming into play...my only negative comment would be that some of the characters are a bit 2 dimensional, but certainly does not diminish this evocative gem of a story...a real must read for any daughter.
