Book Reviews of The Echo MakerBook Review: Bad. Really bad. Summary: 1 Stars
AMAZINGLY slow. 450 pages of trying to develop a relationship that hardly takes off the ground.
How can this writer use a topic such as Capgras (head injury that makes someone believe their family members are imposters) and completely blow it.
Honestly, im not going to be bore everyone and be full of my own opinions, im just writing this to warn anyone who thinks this is an interesting topic to stay clear, because you'll probably be dissapointed.
Book Review: Interesting Summary: 3 Stars
This book was an interesting read and an engaging mystery, at times emotinally touching at a level not ordinary in a fictional novel. I was definitely affected by what the characters were feeling, especially as related to the universal human experience of dashed dreams and bitter disappointments. But, I was let down in the last few pages. The twist at the end lacked punch and the resolution of the plot was ho-hum. Based on the ending, I would not recommend this book.
Book Review: Too many loose ends, Too many directions Summary: 1 Stars
This was a challenge and unejoyable for not only me but my book club of 6 as well. The author makes such a desperate attempt to showcase the ability to write that the story is lost. So many loose ends, so many random occurances and thoughts of which none were revisited and tied together. I suppose the reader is intended to do so on their own. But again with so many, the reader is tired of and loses track of what we are suppose to infer all the time. :(
Book Review: Could have been a contender.... Summary: 3 Stars
Great concept, some brilliant passages, great plot, until....it gets repetitive, overstuffed with medical jargon, characters start to act out of character, and the plot becomes cliche, etc. In other words, until it disintegrates. However, there is a momentum that carries through, so I was glad I finished it.
Bottom line, Cannot BELIEVE this was a finalist for National Book Award. I wouldn't recommend it unless you love this writer.
Book Review: Prize Winning Family Story of Brain Injuries Summary: 3 Stars
When Mark Schulter has a near-fatal car accident, his sister comes home to take care of him. Family secrets, old loves and Mark's recovery changes all their lives. It's a very detailed and confusing but also deeply insightful about one family in one small town. The author delves deeply into each character, sometimes to the point of repetition and boredom. But in the end, it was worth the time and reflection to read this book.
