Book Reviews of The Enemy (Jack Reacher, No. 8)

Book Review: Do NOT Start Here
Summary: 3 Stars

If you have not read Lee Child before, do NOT start with this book - like I did. I picked up this book on the recommendation of my brother-in-law and that's another bone I have to pick with him. In fairness, he recommended Lee Child and Jack Reacher, not 'The Enemy' in particular.

'The Enemy' fills in the back story of Reacher's life and long-time readers will likely appreciate that, but not yet being a long-time reader, I wouldn't know if that saves this book or not. I like action/adventure books (Robert Ludlum, Frederick Forsyth, John Case - I've even choked down many of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan paperweights), so I should like Lee Child and Jack Reacher, but this book did not do it for me. Careful police work and some bare-knuckle action led to an implausible (OK, stupid and silly) climax.

But, since I really do respect my bro-in-law (after all, he also recommended Alan Furst) and so many other readers also rave about the Jack Reacher series, I will likely give Child another go.

Book Review: MP Mystery/Thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

As a librarian, patrons are always suggesting titles for me to read; and I am usuallly a non-fiction reader with slight diversions into fiction here and there. This was one of the titles suggested to me that I read, and I was impressed!

Jack Reacher is a MP recently re-assigned in late December in 1989. A 2-Star General is found dead on New Year's Eve and Jack is thrown into the case with more seemingly unrelated murders and scandal. The story moves along at a fast pace and keeps the reader wanting to know who it was that committed the crime(s). His description of the crime scenes are not detailed enough to make one squirm or sick, however, he does provide enough information to keep the reader knowing what happened

Definately recommended for any fan of fast-paced mysteries and/or military or police procedural type fiction. I feel this will appeal to fans of the tv series JAG and those that want something faster paced.

Book Review: Murder -Conspiracy -Coverup High Up In The U.S. Army
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my first full length novel read by the author. Previously I was introduced to him by his short story Ten Keys which was included in The Cocaine Chronicles. It has been pointed out by some reviewers that the author was not correct with some of the facts about the military in this book. Nevertheless,to me, the plot moved right along at page turning speed and seemed plausible. Jack Reacher was indeed a true action hero. I very much enjoyed the character of MP investigator Lt. Summer. Hopefully she'll return in a future adventure. Basically the story was in late 1989 early 1990 as the military faced downsizing in the post cold war era. Certain key tank brass were concerned that they might be phased out or cut down more or less as were battleships in the past. They took steps to keep their power. Murdered were a two-star general, his wife and several experienced Delta Force members. Toss in some gay sex and you have a very exciting story.

Book Review: I am repulsed by the negative reviews!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

ALL the negative reviews are of people that have some kind of wierd axe to grind with America or Lee Child. This book is absolutely fantastic! This was the very first Lee Child book I've read. I wasn't expecting anything out of the ordinary. I am thrilled that I found this book. I loaned it to my father and he loved it too. The book develops a strong central mystery that unfolds in completely unexpected and supremely satisfying ways. One of the unique aspects of this story is that it never (and I mean never) leaves the main character. It is for this reason that you become the main character. You discover clues as the main character finds them and analyzes them. This book is unquestionably worthy of 5 stars!!!! Do not let the negative reviews frighten you away! I'll be the first to say that Lee Childs previous book "Without Fail" is much less enjoyable. But this book is worth your time!

Book Review: Child steps outside the box with this one.
Summary: 4 Stars

My one male friend that likes to read a lot and I were discussing Lee Child a couple of months ago and he said that "The Enemy" is his favorite Reacher story. He liked the twist but most of all he liked the fact that it took place during the time when Reacher was an MP. Well he told me the darned twist. Did I mention that my friend really likes his alcohol? Don't discuss stuff like novels and movies with a drunk is the lesson I should have learned I guess. But the book dragged in the middle much more than any other entry in the series that I had read. I totally agree that it was fun to read about Reacher as an MP, but I think I prefer him hitching down the road in some small town and somehow getting himself caught up in a bunch of implausible situations a lot more. A very good read, but I just don't agree that it is the best of the series.
