Book Reviews of The Enemy (Jack Reacher, No. 8)Book Review: disappointed Summary: 3 Stars
So, it is official now: Lee Child can actually produce duds (Tripwire, Die Trying, One Shot, Enemy) along with excellent items (Running Blind and Persuader).
It is not a complete loss, however, it is very boring because for the bigger half of the book Reacher does everything but pursuing the most natural line of investigation and the pace is very slow.
Also, there is a feeling that most of every-day-army-life things were simply copied over from General's Daughter by DeMille.
Book Review: A Prequel With Smarts Summary: 5 Stars
Normally, a prequel (such as this novel) represents a letdown. Not this time. This novel ties up all kinds of loose ends from previous novels, and adds everthing from the later novels to your understanding of what's going on. Of couse it doesn't hurt that Child is the best in the business, and it takes him about 12 seconds to get this one up to full blast. How an English mystery writer can know so much about the ends and outs of the American military is incredible.
Book Review: Well Done, Well Thought Summary: 4 Stars
The plot was interesting.
The caracter of Jack Reacher preserves most psychological treats of common human beings without jeopardizing the individuality of the character. Reacher is an attractive fellow.
Based on this book I went on a shopping spree for Lee Child books and picked up Die Trying and The Hard Way and my disappointment ruled out any further attempt.
I wonder:
Was it the same writer?
Did the publishers rushed him up?
Book Review: A page-turner Summary: 5 Stars
This was my first exposure to Lee Child and it won't be the last. A tautly-plotted, well-paced mystery that had me saying "aha!" out loud a couple of times at critical revelations! There are some amusing moments that seem to be in-jokes. The Secretary of Defense (in 1990) is referred to as "A nasty little man" in cahoots with defense contractors. No name mentioned, but you could look it up to see who it was. Of course, this is a work of fiction........
Book Review: Lee Child is a Master Summary: 5 Stars
My first Jack Reacher was a present from some unknown person who left it behind in an airplane. I was hooked.
The Enemy gives us a look back at relationships and events that are often referred to in the chronologically later books...in addition to the usual action, mystery and " hard boiled detecting" that makes these books such page turners.
A good book to add to your collection or to sit up with at night.
