Book Reviews of The Federalist Papers (Signet Classics)

Book Review: All-in-one Federalist Papers
Summary: 5 Stars

The is a good reference copy of The Federalist Papers and it includes The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, and The Constitution with the amendments.

I recommend this book to those that want to learn more about The Constitution and our country's government. The Federalist Papers discuss the merits of the federal government and the intention of The Constitution. We the American people need to understand the political mindset of our country's founding so we can see how far things have gone astray. The federal government's powers are limited and specified, meaning it cannot make up the rules as it goes along. But you wouldn't know that if you simply observed its actions over the last 100 years. Understand the boundaries of federal power yourself - read The Federalist Papers!

Regarding this copy of the book, it's not heavy or bulky and would be ideal if one wants to carry it to class or anywhere else to read and study it. This Signet Classics version is very satisfactory.

Book Review: Fluff
Summary: 3 Stars

I was very eager to read this book as it contains valuable insight on the supreme law of our land. This topic really intrigues me and I bought this book as recommended by others. I could not complete reading the book as it is so boring and filled with needless fluff from the original authors. That is a critigue apon the authors and not the current publisher. The book is well designed and serves it's purpose well. If I were to completely read The Federalist Papers, this would be the source. But, Hamilton, Madison, and Jay are in my opinion horrible writers. I have never seen so many 50+ word rambling sentences in my life. You can condense each essay into a paragraph and receive the same idea and information. It is like a college kids essay that contains 10% information, and 90% fluff in order to meet the word requirements. Just now I opened the book to a random page and counted the words in a single sentence. Are you ready? 83, yes eighty three words in a single sentence. And that was a total random page selection.

Book Review: Heady stuff
Summary: 5 Stars

Not a casual read. It was written in 1780s English - using words and wording not in common use today. But, you get used to it. It was also written to oppose the anti-federalists. So, a lot of time is spent refuting their arguments. - a little off MY purpose for reading - but still enlightening. My overall sense of the book was that it was not written for a 2009 audience. I know this is obvious, but that is my sense reading this book.

I got this book hoping to learn more about the framers' intentions for The Constitution. I was NOT disappointed. This book achieved that goal. The ideas presented in this book are so fundamental and foundational that I can't believe I've been on this earth for 33 years and am only now reading them. This book should be required reading for every high school graduate.

I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in politics or civics.

Book Review: A must read!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book may be boring to some, but I recommend picking this book up as it is the text that Hamiliton, Jay, and Madison wrote in favor of our Constitution. Each section describes the reasoning behind the outline and responsibilites of our federal government and the limited government they envisioned. A good book for political science students and/or American history buffs alike.

I would like to get a copy of the "Anti-Federalist" papers which is obviously the argument against the Constitution, just to get the other side's perspective during the transitioning times from The Articles of Confederation to our Constitution.

Nonetheless, I am glad the Founding Fathers ratified the Constitution, what are leaders are doing to the Consitution today is a crime.

This book includes a copy of the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Articles of Confederation

Book Review: Another vote for must read
Summary: 5 Stars

The details have already been well covered so let me just add another five star vote for must read(or for many of us reread). Whatever your political views you simply cannot understand the basis of our countries principles without working through the Federalist Papers. Step away from the bloggers and bar stool pundits(same thing really-just different delivery) and do your own homework on the founding of this great country. I am not a flag waving, rah, rah patriot type but it is hard to come away from a reading of the Federalist papers without a profound respect, admiration and in my case awe of the principles which form our government.

Lastly, this is a review of the Signet series which is very good but frankly I suggest not spending too much time worrying about which edition, publisher etc. The main point is to get a copy and start studying.
