Book Reviews of The Female Brain

Book Review: Enlightening
Summary: 5 Stars

While not everything listed as a 'fact' here was true (I am a woman and some of it simply did not ring true for me), there is a lot that is true. The important thing about this book is that it makes people understand that there are reasons for certain behaviors that arent' always obvious. It explains how the female brain is different than the male brain and how this triggers different ways of handling things. I would like to seem much more on this topic because I really think there is something very enlightening here that men and women can benefit from. Women do think differently than men and it is high time that books and television and magazines accept this. I am seeing it more and more in books like "Enchanted" by Nancy Madore and "I Feel Bad About my Neck" by Nora Ephron (both very good books). It is very refreshing to have our thoughts and behaviors as women accepted as normal.

Book Review: I was born in Ireland, and loved reading important facts i did not learn as a wee girl
Summary: 4 Stars

I had heard about this book from my friend Wynonna Judd, and i wanted to read it so much. My friend got it for me for Christmas.
I learned alot about myself as a Woman, and it really makes you think about the way Men and Woman react to things in such different ways.
This Doctor knows what she is talking about, and she got the help of other proffessionals in the business to keep all the information up to date and done her homework.
I would recommend this book to any Woman who cares enough about herself to learn more about our complex thoughts and bodies.
I loved this book alot, and i have passed it on to my other irish Roomate.
They do not talk about things like this when you are a wee girl in Ireland, so i was learned alot about myself as a Woman now living in nashville, TN USA.
Read this book girls, it will help.

Book Review: WORTHLESS
Summary: 1 Stars

Actually, this book has negative value: Not only can I not give it to anyone, for fear of perpetuating the notions therein; but I can't throw it away without wasting a couple pounds of paper.

At first astonished by the amazing differences she cites between male and female brains, I started to track down her references. They were ancient, vague, and wholly unconvincing. Lesson learned: If it sounds unbelievable, it probably is unbelievable.

What a shame, when there is so much fascinating research on the real differences between male and female brain function. The truth would have been much more interesting than this misleading wad of pop-psychology. And much less destructive to the causes of science literacy and the understanding of human behavior.

Brizendine has done readers, and her fellow educators, a stunning disservice.

Book Review: The Female Brain Book Review
Summary: 5 Stars

The Female Brain is one of the greatest books I've read. This book is so helpful for women from all walks of life, be a mom, teenager and even a grandma. Brizendine explains in concrete detail the different effects of hormones in men and women and most of all she gives situations wherein normal people without a medical degree can relate too. What also makes the book a great read is because Brizendine even relates her own experiences to her readers. With this book, I am now understanding myself better especially when I have my mood swings or when Im feeling depressed. Guys should also read this book to understand their wives and girlfriends so that they won't tear their eyes out anymore once we women start balling out like crazy over a baby shampoo commercial. I swear, this book will probably be a key factor in saving your relationships with the oppposite sex.

Book Review: File in Fiction, not Science.
Summary: 1 Stars

The problem with this book is that Brizendine actively misrepresents research and uses numbers that are basically made-up. Her "science" doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

For instance, on differences between male and female speech patterns she claims that women speak three times more words than men in a day, and speak almost twice as fast. In fact, no reliable studies had been done when the book came out. Prompted by the book, somebody actually bothered to measure, and it turned out that men and women speak about the same number of words, and men speak (very slightly) faster. You can get details about the studies from the excellent blog LanguageLog, which reports on real linguistic science. Google for the post titled "Gabby guys: the effect size".

In sum: This book should be filed in the Fiction section, not the Science section.
