Book Reviews of The Female Brain

Book Review: Disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

I would have given this another star or two if I hadn't heard something about it on NPR tonight. A linguist from UC Berkeley ripped the book, saying the author's various claims, eg women use three times as many words a day as men, that they talk faster...are simply not true. The first claim, for example, was supposedly taken from a book by a self-help guru, who apparently just made it up. The linguist (can't recall name) claims the opposite is true for both these claims; men use more words than women and also speak slightly faster. The author's factoids are easily accepted because they agree with our prejudices. He goes on to dispute Brizendine's claims in other areas as well.

If true, this is disturbing. It assumes either ignorance or dishonesty. Either is not something one would expect from someone who portrays herself as an expert.

Book Review: Everything you always wanted to know about ...
Summary: 4 Stars

Everyone should read this! Guys, it won't kill you to read this technical manual on your significant other. Gals, know thyself!

I like the author's style; it is breezy where it should be, and adequately technical where necessary. There are plenty of examples from her practice to whet one's interest.

More than half the population of the Earth use this 'operating system' - not to put too fine a point on it. There are neurological and hormonal reasons for the way we see life. This author doesn't waste any time with being politically correct. Science and medicine don't have time for that. It's so 60's. This is about facts. The facts, M'am, just the facts.

Knowledge is power; get some here.

Recommended.

Book Review: Enlightening and entertaining
Summary: 5 Stars

Dr. Brizendine finally explained why everything that happens ... really happens. The book is full of lightly peppered scientific explanations for all that we know to be true about women. There are a few surprises and some of the revelations are truly amazing. She explains, in a light manner, the hows and why of why females relate to the rest of the world. She's answered many of the questions I ever had about why people react to each other the way they do.

I'd love to see every woman read this book, since forewarned is forearmed. Well done, Dr. Brizendine! I look forward to your writing a book on "The Male Brain." From a woman with that "zest".

Book Review: Good Book
Summary: 4 Stars

Great book.
Really easy reading. It gives the reader an idea of the mechanics of the brain in this case the female brain. I personally enjoy this book it gave me a lot to think about, and it help me understand why females react differently than males in different situations. As a avid reader of psychology and philosophy I disagree in some aspects of freewill that the author describes in this book. I truly believe that we are a combination of nature and nurture. If you believe that all of our actions are the result of chemicals reactions in our brain this is a book for you. Over all I like this book and I would recommend reading it to anyone that is interested in Gender Studies, Women's Studies, Psychology and Sociology.

Book Review: Unnecessary bias wrecks the effort
Summary: 1 Stars

I admit I only made it through 30 pages of this book which my wife loved and really wanted me to read. I found the tone regarding men offensive to the degree of which the author lost credibility in my mind. I understand from the reviews that the first third of the book is that way. I have no problem with an author trying to teach and have fun at some expense of men, but I could not get past the stereotyping - and don't expect your man to share the same experience from the book. Perhaps I will give the later chapters a try and ignore the errors noted in these valuable reviews. But I give it one-star for wrecking what could have been a helpful dialogue.
