Book Reviews of The Female BrainBook Review: not sure I have brain envy...but I liked the book anyway Summary: 4 Stars
the premise of the book, that women are these amazing communication machines, is more of marketing ploy than anything else. there's some interesting evolutionary adaptation that seems to play out in the social structures of women, but that's pretty obvious to anyone who's read anything about evolution prior to this. the interesting stuff is really how hormones "cook" the brain into its male, female, or in-between biological versions. I suppose it's also a good way to understand why women tend to lust after the wrong kinds of men. I'd read Before The Dawn before reading this, and take this for what it is--a pretty light read on a very heavy topic.
Book Review: A MUST READ for MEN and Women Summary: 5 Stars
Dr. Brizendine has done a great service to all men and women in her scientific yet very readable and enjoyable book. I have told ALL my friends to get a copy of this book. Women will read it and say Yes, yes, yes, I KNEW I was not crazy--at 15 or 55. Men will read it and say "Oh my goodness, she is not crazy after all." And we will all know how to get along much better as a result. I am a medical/mental health professional and now have a great resource to refer people to as I explain "It's not in your/her head." This is a wonderful beginning in explaining to us all the biological bases of behavior and emotion. Thank you Dr. Brizendine!
Book Review: Stimulating Reading Summary: 4 Stars
"The Female Brain" applies science to the concept that men are from Mars and women from Venus. Sex specific behavior that has been recognized for centuries is explained from a biological/neurological standpoint. It is particularly interesting because neuropsychiatrists can now examine the brain in ways that were never possible before. But the author has been accused of being sloppy in some of her research, which is a shame. So much in here is worthwile, I hate to see the well supported concepts loose credibility. Despite the criticism, it's a real eye-opener with some solid research reflected in the extensive bibliography.
Book Review: A must read for both women and men! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a literary romp through the whys and wherefores of the female brain and the evolved behaviors that are wired into that brain. Dr. Brizendine skillfully takes the reader through the life stages of a woman, devoting each chapter to a different stage (e.g. "Teen Girl Brain", "Mommy Brain"). She uses real life examples from her clinical patients and weaves her stories with compassion, intelligence, and humor. Every man and woman who reads this wonderful book will want to quote her statistics and smile at memorable life stages in their own lives. It is a great gift for girl friends and boy friends!
Book Review: Not a Scientist Summary: 3 Stars
I am not a scientist, researcher , or doctor and therefore can't comment on the extensive reviews done by those in the clinical fields; however, I can comment on the use of "cutesy" language and the "dumbing" down approach to the female brain. How much research is being done on the ethereal energy that separates male and female? Maybe I'm too "new age" or alternative-minded, but I've learned alot more about gender differences, male and female energy, female brains and reactions from Deepak Chopra, Rayna Gangi and Andrew Weil than I did from this fairly bad attempt.
