Book Reviews of The Friday Night Knitting Club (Friday Night Knitting Club Novels)

Book Review: Note to Author: Maybe you could've kept the door open?
Summary: 3 Stars

Without giving too much away, I gotta say...first to the author. When you have a book like The Friday Night Knitting Club and you have a whole cast of characters and all, somehow, you think about how you're going to keep that going. I mean, I could've seen a real series here. Or at least a sequel. But the way you decided to handle things...well, you sorta closed the door to that. (The door's not COMPLETELY closed), but when you get rid of the nucleus, the outright CENTER of the story, then what are you left with? What are the readers supposed to be left with?

That said, here are my impressions of the story at hand:

Basically, I liked it. I agree with one of the reviewers who said that some of the characters are kinda hard to keep track of--in particular, Lucie and K.C.. I think one of them is going to have a baby and the other is going back to law school? But what they have going on in their lives beyond that, isn't always so clearly defined or brought out.

Also, the thing with Peri and her pocketbooks, I forget how she was able to do it, but something doesn't quite ring true that she'd be able to sell her 'felted' purses to such a high end store like Bloomingdale's. A boutique in SoHo, or the village, Yes! But Bloomie's? I'm not so sure about that? But hats off to her success! I just don't think it could happen in the real world.

Also, it was something to the rhythm of the writing. It didn't always seem very balanced between the characters. For some reason, I wanted to see more of Anita and Marty. Like when Anita goes over to his house that first time for dinner, it kinda ends in the middle and you're left kinda hanging--like what hapenned next? Did they enjoy their dinner? What did they manage to talk about? Because it's like not very long after that, they decide to live together. And I really don't see this happening. I mean, Marty's a nice guy and so is Anita, but I think because of their history, it would've made better sense to have had him propose marriage. I think that could've worked given the context of their relationship.

Also, the plot line with Cat. I don't know? I wanted something more with the dress that Georgia made for her. It's like you go through all this stuff in getting the dress made, and all she does is serve her husband in it, and that's it. Where's the pay off? At first when I was reading about it, I thought the story would've culminated with finishing the dress and Cat would've been triumphant and...and...well, that's not what this story is about.

James is also not the bad guy that you think he is. (I wish Georgia could've opened his letters sooner.) And I wish they would've gotten married when Georgia kinda brought it up.

But again, that's not what this story is about.

What it seems to be about, is a group of women who have these lofty plans to do these lofty things. I'm just not sure if put a real context, they'd be able to do them.

Also, the thing with Darwin and her husband, I'm not sure if he'd forgive her so easily with just a sweater?

I mean, does ANYONE believe that?

There's a lot to think about in The Friday Night Knitting Club. And maybe that was the point?
