Book Review: Grating. Wearying. Go elsewhere!

I was a loyal Cornwell fan from the beginning and for years, but have watched the Scarpetta books go into decline as the main characters went wacko. The Carolina series with the reporter never worked for me, and I've gotten so selective that I don't automatically engage anymore as I see something new put out by this former favorite author.
But, having been lured into "page-turner" novels on CD for the car in recent months (such a relief from talk radio!), and having run through the Kathy Reichs offerings, I browsed and picked up The Front.
In a word, torture. The reader's voice is grating, with over-the-top awkwardly precise diction, and with an inability to tease out a Boston accent, she's opted for New Yawk. Awful. Then, there's the story line, if you can call it that. Still trying to figure out who's on whose side, and what the relationships are, and what anyone is actually doing. The characters are wooden, boring, and annoying. What's the plot? Hard to say. Suddenly, Scotland Yard has burst onto the scene with no discernible reason behind it. The only benefit is that the reader's British accent is her best . . . the diction thing gets lost in it. But, it's hardly redeeming. Thankfully, this book is only a four disc investment . . . I couldn't take anymore.
Can this really be by the same author who created Kay, Lucy, Benton, and Marino (back in the good old days in Richmond)? Ms. Cornwell, your muse must be on life support!
