Book Reviews of The Front

Book Review: Definitely gentler, possibly better than Scarpetta
Summary: 5 Stars

The Front is Cornwell's second novella with Win Garano as the protagonist. He's a clever, charismatic and caring detective who wears second hand clothes to dress with style on a dime and food shops, seemingly daily, for his quirky yet wonderful grandmother (who by the way, is mixing potions and practicing "the craft" at home). In many ways, he's a kinder, gentler character than Scarpetta. While Scarpetta has a hard edge and is accustomed to calling all the shots, this guy puts together the pieces of the puzzle while simultaneously appeasing, charming, caring for and/or simply dealing with an overly demanding boss, a reluctant associate, a pain-in-the-posterior reporter and others. Instead of autopsies, Win does some good old fashioned leg work, investigating and problem solving. Of course, one thing hasn't changed: there are the twists and turns that I've grown to expect from and love in of every Cornwell novel. I WANT MORE !

Book Review: Cornwell in the fast lane
Summary: 4 Stars

The Front, although brief, did not disappoint for lack of twists and turns - all served up at a rapid-fire pace. Unlike Kay Scarpetta, whose character is so deeply nuanced that it is taking years to get to know her, we get the take on the characters in this novel within a few pages. That is, with the exception of Massachusetts state investigator, Win Garano, and his boss, the less than admirable District Attorney, Monique Lamont, who I suspect will together and separately have more of their stories to tell. (I recommend that you read the previous book featuring Garano and Lamont, "At Risk," for more background.) And I do love Nana and Miss Dog. But rather than a novel, I felt that I was reading a series of well-crafted vignettes. That makes it different than what you'd expect from a book by Cornwell. It definitely cuts to the chase, but as with the rest of Ms. Cornwell's novels, when I finished the read, I wanted to know more.

Book Review: A Bestseller for All of the Right Reasons!
Summary: 5 Stars

It is SUCH a treat to have another Patricia Cornwell novel on the market so soon after her latest Scarpetta page-turner, BOOK OF THE DEAD.

Now that I've read THE FRONT, I highly recommend it! Win Garano, the attractive, stylish, yet down-to-earth, detective is inexplicably assigned a sexual homicide case by his opportunistic, sexy boss, Monique Lamont, the Middlesex County D.A.

Garano says the Massachusetts case isn't just cold, it's frozen, and he hates being used by Lamont to promote her hidden political agenda. And why is Scotland Yard brought into the mix? As he carefully reviews old case files in the small town near Boston where the murder occurred, Garano is assisted by a smart, scrappy, crime scene analyst, Stump, and sparks begin to fly . . . This is a great summertime mystery by the unsurpassed storyteller and forensic science expert, Patricia Cornwell. What could be better!

Book Review: New Characters Become New Friends!
Summary: 5 Stars

In all honesty, I was prepared not to like this book. I am not a big fan of change, and the thought of a Patrica Caldwell without Kay Scarpetta, Lucy, Benton, Pete and all the rest left me a bit cool about this novel. Everyone thing was different - the characters, the basic premise of the story, even the writing itself seemed a bit "off".

It didn't take long, however, to begin to enjoy the unfamiliar territory. In just a couple of chapters, I had already added Win and Nana to my list of new friends.

The story itself was a quick and easy read- I finished it in just two sittings. The conclusion had me guessing all the way, however. "The Front" is a fun, exciting mystery that will please both fans of Kay Scarpetta as well as those just introduced to Patricia Caldwell.

Perhaps some day we will be lucky enough to have everyone in the same story. Now that would be a real treasure!!

Book Review: Love Cornwell's new Series!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read that Cornwell inked a deal with Lifetime to make two of her books into movies. I am a big Cornwell fan, and so I was very curious which ones. After a little digging I discovered it was a small series made up of "At Risk" and "The Front." Though I have always been a fan of Scarpetta, I somehow has missed out on this series. Needless to say I went out to the book store and promptly bought "At Risk." I loved her new characters almost as much as the original so when "The Front" came out, I was the first in line for a copy. It was the headline of my summer reading list, and I was not disappointed. Though I really like Win and Stump, I have to say that Nana was my favorite. The only thing I found disappointing was how quick a read this was, I would have liked to spend more time with her characters! But, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an excellent summer read!
