Book Reviews of The FrontBook Review: Not In the Loop Summary: 2 Stars
As a recipient of an advance copy, rather than a fan waiting anxiously for the next installment, I came at this book feeling somewhat handicapped.
Not being familiar with Ms. Cornwell's style, I found it a bit disconcerting for everything to be written in the present tense and much in incomplete sentences. Though considered a "novella", the brevity (180 pages)provided little chance for full character development. [Though his race is of no importance, it would have been helpful to know that the hero is black before I read half the book with a different mental image.] Otherwise, I found the plot unique and the pace quick and compelling. It was refreshing to read a cop/detective book with no profanity or explicit or gratuitous sex. Though entertaining, this book was not engaging enough, probably, to seek out another.
Book Review: SHE'S DONE IT 5 Stars
YES, SHE'S DONE IT AGAIN!!! I LOVED THIS BOOK. It is very exciting to see that Patricia Cornwell can go from the AMAZING journey of Kay Scarpetta to her new characters, Monique Lamont, Win Garano, Nana and Stump; without you once feeling you abandoned the old ones by connecting to Monique and Win. This book helped you discover the new characters and their personalities and egos. We all can connect with each of the characters in some way. Patricia has the incredible talent of weaving her stories together with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. I did not want to put this book down. Once again, her book is written with the highest standards of propriety and research. I am looking forward to her next one in the series.....Keep 'em coming, Patricia, we Love You....
Book Review: A Great New Detective Series Summary: 5 Stars
I don't know how Patricia Cornwell is able to continually create characters that immediately capture their audience. This new cast of characters are as interesting and individual as those in her Scarpetta series. I actually prefer these two new novellas,(The Front and At Risk), because while they are "edge of your seat" types of books, with plenty of crime solving these two books are less grim than Predator and Book of the Dead.
The Front provides more insight into Win, Nana and Lamont while introducing a new detective, Stump. I enjoyed Nana's character the most as she is eccentric, loving and to many may seem a little crazy. Humor sprinkled throughout the continually twisting plot was entertaining and much like other Cornwell books. I recommend this book to everyone!
Book Review: Fetid Tripe Summary: 1 Stars
I don't have the time to go into all of the ways that this excuse for a novel does not work on the most basic levels. Here are a few: plot, character development, the ability to draw the reader into the "willing suspension of disbelief" that is necessary for fiction to work.
The characters are not believable. It is jarring to be asking yourself every few pages why somebody would ever do what they are doing. The entire cast of characters cannot be psychotic. There has to be some coherent reason for what they say and do. There is a strained connection to New Scotland Yard that is supposed to be a major plot prop, yet makes no sense at all.
The next time I have a choice between buying a Cornwell book or buying 5 or 6 gallons of gas? Fill 'er up!
Book Review: CANNOT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE Summary: 5 Stars
I read an article about how the Lifetime network was going to make movies out of two of Patricia Cornwell's books - At Risk and this book, The Front. Having been a fan for years of Scarpetta, I decided to give this other series a try - and I was happy I did. The plot is rich and has those involved, Win, a MA State Police Officer, his quirky grandmother Nana, the troubled District Attorney Monique, and the new, colorful character Stump, trying to solve real-time crimes, as well as a cold case with international implications. The characters colorful personalities really come out as they work on these endeavors and the narrative becomes even more ripe as relationships begin to unfurl. The book is faced paced and will make a wonderful movie. I hope the series continues.
