Book Review: A rapidly worsening series

About a year and a half ago, a comic collection at a bookstore caught my eye which was the first Get Fuzzy collection. I bought it on a whim and loved it. It was witty and full of truisms to anyone who lived with cats and dogs. Fast forward to 2003 to the third collection of Get Fuzzy comic strips and one can sense the downward spiral this once promising strip has.All the elements seem to be there for a good collection. Darby Conley's drawing has tightened up and gotten much better since the beginning. A nemesis for Bucky arrives in the form of Squiggly the ferret. 9/11 themed strips and a storyline that follows Satchel getting hit by a bike starts to give the comic more dimension.
But somewhere along the way, the jokes and comic timing went horribly awry. The setup for a punchline comes up and either goes off into left field, doesn't work, or gets degraded to a literal interpretation of a phrase (example - Joe is making jerk chicken and Bucky proclaims "Hey what chicken isn't?"). There's maybe only three or four strips in the whole book with any real comic punch (example - Bucky is reading "To Kill a Mockingbird". Rob says "Buck, I'm happy that you're reading, but you know that's not a how-to book, right?". Bucky replies with "Oh... I thought it was a little off topic..."). It's a bit disturbing to find a comic strip artist running out of material when he's just getting started in the business.
It's also a bit disturbing to find most of the characters turning one-dimensional. Rob seems nothing more than Bucky's harrowed owner with little else to say than backtalk. What happened to his outside life to give us a sense of well-rounded personality?
I remember telling people about this discovery of mine. Now this discovery has turned sour and I don't feel the need to continue the Get Fuzzy experience anymore.
