Young Ranofer is slender and agile, honest with respect for the gods and their deputies on earth. Having been instructed in the art of goldsmithing by his father, his heart belongs to the gold craft: he longs to create objects of beauty perhaps to be worn by Pharaoh's household. Yet he finds himself a helpless pawn to the crocodile ambition of his vicious half-brother, who beats, starves and generally abuses him.

Heartsick and bodysore Ranofer finally acquires two loyal friends who share their midda! y meals, rustic shelter along the Nile and modest dreams together. By pooling their efforts and information gleaned in a spy game, they realizie Gebu's greedy scheme and help Ranofer when he is in crisis. What is evil Gebu up to in the dead of night, sneaking about with his nefarious cronies, placing his personal seal on everything from stored food to his bedroom door? Who would dare disturb the 3000-year rest prescribed for royalty?

But the boy who would be an apprentice goldsmith learns far darker secrets in the hated stonecutter's shop, whence he is abruptly transfered, where his nimble fingers risk being gouged daily. Secrets that would prove of great interest in a Pharaoh's bejewled ears. But who would believe a dirty, ragtag boy, who feas for his very life as the plot uncoils around him like a golden cobra armband?

This is a suspenseful read with heavy action at the end--a great introduction to ancient Egypt for elementary children. Perhaps the details of st! one working and goldsmithing will not appeal to dialogue-or! iented kids, but more mature readers will learn much about this marvelous civilization which has inspired and intrigued the world for centuries. May the sacred orb on Ra's immortal head never set on your golden dreams, oh noble Youth!
