Book Reviews of The Gospel of Mary Magdalene

Book Review: Draw Some Conclusions of Your Own First
Summary: 2 Stars

The Gospel of Mary Magdalene
Jean-Yves Leloup
Forward by Jacob Needleman

Scholarly and contemplative this translation of the Gnostic Text as well as the commentary seems to warrant continued study of the scripture. The gospel itself is brief as are the author's comments. The book has the flavor of psychology and academia leaving most readers looking for something more pertinent to life today. I did like Leloup's comments on the value of the Divine Feminine and the Imaginal, a feminine domain. First read the Gospel of Mary Magdalen on line drawing some intuitive conclusions of your own. Then use this or other works to broaden your vision.

Book Review: Lovely Book!

Elitest? Elitist is thinking that Christianity is superior to all other religions/belief systems, when it is clearly outnumbered in this world by other belief systems. Everyone in the world believes in "something" and it has worked for them for generations. We should all be open-minded in how one chooses to interpret the bible especially because within Christianity there are a multitude of religions which interpret the Bible differently, from Catholics to Protestants to Jehova's Witnesses.

The key is to be open-minded and respectful of how others choose to live their life, especially if it does not seek out to hurt or abuse others and the world around them.

Book Review: Miriam's Message
Summary: 5 Stars

Jacob Needleman's rendering and analysis of the gospel of Mary Magdalene is a learned one and written in a manner that does not require a degree in theology to comprehend. Anyone interested in Christ and Christianity will find this short gospel fills in the huge gaps left by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John about the relationship and the importance of Mary to Jesus and to the early church. Mary met every qualification but one to be included as an Apostle, she not male. This distortion of the role and value of women is still present in the Roman Catholic Church. It is no wonder why her Gospel was excluded.

Book Review: the way back
Summary: 5 Stars

For those of us who were raised with the either/or view of female sacredness ("virgin" or "whore"), "The Gospel of Mary Magdelene" may very well provide a way back to the spiritual with an understanding of feminine spirituality that completely complements other accounts of Jesus's teachings. In some ways just as illuminating as the canonical gospels and less bewildering than the gnostic gospels, "Mary Magdalene" finds the personal intimation of scripture that so many of us have been waiting for. I cannot speak to the accuracy of Leloup's translation, but I can say that his commentary is thorough and fair.

Book Review: Gospel Truth
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the happy outcomes of The Da Vinci Code phenomenon is a wider awareness of the "Gnostic Gospels". Publishers have not been slow to respond, but this precious volume towers above the crowded scene along with its companion titles in the series: the Gospels of Thomas and Philip. The French admire and understand these long-lost Scriptures and Leloup uniquely combines mystical insight with scholarly wisdom. The big problem is that other most editors and commentators "leave the track" because they are one or the other. Your best guide is qualified in both fields! Take this book to your heart.
