Book Reviews of The Gospel of Mary Magdalene

Book Review: Re-read it and you will get more out of it!
Summary: 5 Stars

The first time I read this book it was as if my Catholic brain could not absorb the detail. I re-read it and similarly I have very limited memory of reading it at all. The third time was the charm, it all started to click in to place, it was as if my brain had to be jump started. I am now reading it again, 4th time, and hope that I glean even more. I like the way the material is presented by the Author as well, his insights into early Christian/Jewish, or vice versa, traditions are interesting as well. All in all this book is worth the re-read!

Book Review: Profound and scholarly
Summary: 5 Stars

This is quite simply the best exegesis ever written of this gospel. The translation is also readable, though since I'm not a Coptic scholar, I can't say how it compares with others in print. Leloup's insights combine both hard-nosed historical scholarship and a deep sensitivity to spritual and philosophical questions, the fruit of a person who has done inner work on himself, not merely academic intellectual work. This quality alone separates it from all the other versions in print, which fall short on philosophical depth.

Book Review: make the semantic switch
Summary: 5 Stars

in a sense, magdalene was the first "christian"...

but now that mission [started by the misleading Petra Vati Canine(!)and "paul/saul"...AND carried to an extreme by the extremist doctrine and bigotry of Fundamentalism} has FAILED.

in that light, isn't it time we reclaim the hour, the era?

make the semantic switch:

yeshua was a "magdelinian"...

so....

hail set and the bloodline of sarah! the goddess returns to reset the ba'alance! hail

Book Review: Splendid and Thought-Provoking
Summary: 5 Stars

At last a Gnostic Gospel is presented in a way that even non-Gnostics can love. Leloup's excellent commentary adequately summarizes the Gnostic world-view without being intrusive, and the light he shines on the Gospel of Magdalene will make you ponder no matter what you believe, even if you believe nothing. It is short enough to read quickly -- but you probably won't. It's too good. Savor its wisdom and go back to it often. It's a spiritual experience par excellance and a bargain to boot.

Book Review: Skip this Edition - Get the Karen King Edition
Summary: 2 Stars

Leloup's edition of the Gospel of Mary Magdalene is of minimal value in light of the new publication of an authoritative edition by Karen King: The Gospel of Mary of Magdala. Karen King's edition offers both a far superior translation of the original text, and a superb commentary on importance and interpretation of the Gospel of Mary.

If you do choose to purchase this Leloup edition, please be sure and also pick up a copy of King's new edition. Then judge for yourself.
