Book Reviews of The Greatest Miracle in the WorldBook Review: Borders on blasphemy...... Summary: 2 Stars
I was prepared to like this book, as it came highly recommended from a friend. My problem isn't so much with what it says as what it doesn't say. I find it to be secular humanism in disguise. The basic premise of "you have all the potential in the world inside you and just need to tap into this to succeed" is pretty much the standard modern self-help philosophy. But to phrase this in terms of a memorandum from God...oh my.....is bordering on blasphemy, and I don't use that term lightly. Og and others: read the book of Ephesians to find out where the real power to transform your life comes from. It's the saving and redemptive work of Jesus, who is never mentioned once in this book. Even the title....The Greatest Miracle...refers to the author's idea that each individual is the greatest miracle. Sorry, Og, but I think I would reserve that for the Son of God made man. Tapping into one's abilities may make you a better person on earth but it can't get you eternal life. But through faith in Jesus a person is literally reborn and transformed.
Book Review: My version of "The Bible" Summary: 5 Stars
This book has helped me to increase my self-esteem and to regain that desire for a better life that has been lost for some time. It has served as a reminder to dream those big dreams, to be grateful for things that I already possess, to strive for the things that I want to achieve through working for them (as I have learned that those things truely worth having are not handed to you). This book has helped me to realize that although I believe in destiny, fate, or call it "divine intervention"- I have a choice! I can choose either path, but I need to remember that God has not intended for me to fail or to be unhappy. The choice is mine. Although I am not a very religious person; I do consider myself to be spiritual. For me, The God Memorandum is "my bible" and it expresses several principles that date back to writings from the original Bible. This is a definite "must keep" in the house and throughout my life!
Book Review: a wonderful read Summary: 3 Stars
I finished reading this book just a few minutes ago & found it to be a wonderful read. It deals with humanity's need for a healthy dose of self-esteem from a Godly perspective. This, however, can in no way replace God's actual memorandum to the world in the form of His immutable, undeniable Word of God- which some parts of this book paraphrase and allude to. This hopeful, encouraging work of fiction is commendable also as it points people in an upward direction in order for them to move forward. This book- seen in the light for what it truly is- will help many. But only those who accept the atoning work of Jesus will truly be "saved" & thus enabled to love their neighbor as they love themselves. It reminds me of a type of John the Baptist who served to prepare the way of the Lord & to teach the concept of repentace so when the Messiah started His ministry many were prepared to receive Him.
Book Review: Og Mandino, a Ragpicker by any other name. Summary: 5 Stars
Og Mandino achieved the pinacle of his field, selling more inspirational books than any other writer in his time. Had he stopped with "The Greatest Salesman in the World," we would have all been short changed. His writing of the "Greatest Miracle in the World" surpassed all his other works in how it inspires people, but that alone wasn't enough for him to achieve.Even with books like "The Choice" and "The Twelveth Angel," he never seemed to disappoint his readers. There was something for everyone. Mr. Og's books aren't for just anyone, they're for everyone. Some of us just don't know it yet. If you know of someone that has bottomed out, give them a personal copy of this book.... Put a personal inscription in it.... Help them make it through the 100 days.... Wear your ragpicker emblem in humility, but with love. Your reward is yet to come.
