Book Reviews of The GruffaloBook Review: A storytime favorite Summary: 5 Stars
The story is fun and rhymes to a fun meter and infers a moral of courage and intellect. Every Julia Donaldson book we have read is filled with the same kind of poetry and cute storytelling - she is gifted.
Both of our children, now 5 and 3, have loved this book. The different animal encounters make it easy to do some "voices" for each, although my Gruffalo voice sounds somewhat akin to Billy Bob Thornton in "Sling Blade".
My favorite Gruffalo memory, however, occurred last night when I heard our three-year son "reading" this book to his bed buddies in the dark. The story is so easy to remember that he can pretty much now recite it, which as a parent makes you all warm inside.
Book Review: One of my absolute favorites! Summary: 5 Stars
It has been my self-imposed duty to make sure that my young son has an extensive library. Of the two hundred+ books on his shelf right now, we like The Gruffalo and Karma Wilson's Bear books the best (far and away). My son is only nine months old, and longer books typically do not hold his interest, but he grins from ear to ear every time I read this book! He is always sad when we finish the last page. The dialogues are fun, the cadences are perfect and the artwork is hilarious. We read the Gruffalo almost every night and I daresay I like it just as much as my son. The Gruffalo is a blast; I highly recommend that you pick it up for your kid(s) today (along with K. Wilson's Bear books).
Book Review: Lovin' The Gruffalo for all ages Summary: 4 Stars
I'm an 8th grade language arts teacher. I just used this book to teach irony, situational and dramatic. The product description does a good job describing the plot. It's about a quick thinking mouse who makes up The Gruffalo to keep others from "inviting" him for lunch, tea, etc. In turn, the mouse is shocked to learn there really is a Gruffalo and uses the other animals to make the Gruffalo believe he is a scary creature himself. My 8th graders loved it, and the simple displays of irony made it a good example for my students, especially my ESL students. My own boys (5 and 6) love it too. It spends time going to and from school with me, and everyone likes to read it again and again.
Book Review: My Current Favorite For the Kids Summary: 5 Stars
Not much to say about it. The kids absolutely love the book and so do I. The rhythym of the words is captivating as well as the content.
The story is of a mouse who is walking through the "deep dark wood" and comes across the very 'monster' that he was making up.
In the end, everyone parts ways. No bloodbath or anything. What I like best about the book is that the other animals 'invite' the mouse for lunch(snake, owl, etc). They kind of hint that he is the lunch but don't come right out and say it. Not only is this better for kids as it leaves much to their imagination it adds to the story.
I have this book memorized.
Book Review: One of our all-time favorites. Have given as gift many times Summary: 5 Stars
This is a book that both children and adults love. My key point to you (if you're a parent) - you won't tire of reading this book to your kids (unlike other books). The story/humor is very fun and great illustrations. The story is essentially about a mouse that goes for a walk in the woods, and how it manages to fend off other bigger creatures by being extremely clever.
We fell in love with the book, that we've given this as a gift many times - and all our friends have thanked us heartily to introducing them. Don't worry - buy this book now, you'll love it.
We also recommend the follow-on, the Gruffalo's Child.
