Book Reviews of The Gun Digest Book Of Concealed CarryBook Review: A few pearls, lots of swine Summary: 2 Stars
This book is out of date and rather superficial. But that is probably true about any book on the topic. There are lots of changes taking place in holster and gun technology that invalidate - or at least 'age' - most articles on this topic. Many of the newer holsters e.g. 'the super tuck deluxe by Crossbreed' are not compared to some of the older designs. The Kangaroo (and other) shoulder holsters are not covered in any detail, and there is no systematic evaluation of concealed carry techniques. For example, what do you do with your left arm when you make a right handed cross draw from a concealed holster? Remeber the second rule of firarm safety? "Don't point your weapon at anything you don't want destroyed by a bullet." Cross draw can expose your left elbow and forearm to the path of muzzle discharge.
There are some pearls scattered through the text and some important points made. The book is an easy and quick read but not a great reference and could be organized better. Overall, it is likely to add a certain amount to your knowledge base but don't have very high expectations for it.
Book Review: Concealed Carry, yes... and a lot more! Summary: 5 Stars
There's a lot to be learned from this book. Whether you are an experienced gun owner or a newbie, you will learn a lot regarding Concealed Carry. But there is a deeper benefit for inexperienced gun owners.
The author has a skilled command of the language. This, combined with his long experience, keeps the reader's interest. If you are a new gun owner and have no immediate interest in Concealed Carry, you should still read this book.
Here's just one example: Chapter 6, Defense Loads of Choice, discusses different kinds of bullets. OK, who cares? Well, it turns out to be very important if you are using your handgun for personal defense to protect your family and you wound an attacker, but kill your own family member. With one shot, one bullet. How can that happen? It's possible if you don't think clearly about what kind of ammunition to use. The sub-chapter item, "Seven cases highlight the reality," will give you plenty of information about that.
I recommend this book for everyone but especially for those who are just now starting out.
Book Review: Good Stuff to Know Summary: 3 Stars
Ayoob has been carrying weapons and writing about self defense with firearms longer than most of us have been alive. I recently decided to carry a concealed weapon since I live in a state where it is allowed. We have long had weapons around our home for home defense, but with things as they are these days, carrying a concealed weapon sounded better and better.
Not knowing much about it, I wanted to read whatever I could, and literally everyone I spoke to who knew anything about it referred me to Ayoob.
The book is a little dated - especially some of the photos - but the information is virtually timeless. Ayoob writes in a conversational style that makes it easy to read and understand. This book will give you a decent introduction to the topic.
NOTE: No book, no matter how good, can take the place of hands-on instruction with your own weapon. Get this book and read it if you are considering carrying a concealed weapon; but ALSO be SURE to sign up for a professionally-taught course on the subject.

Book Review: The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry Summary: 4 Stars
Found a lot out that made this book really worth the time to read (by Massad Ayoob). We live in changing times and changing AMMO too! Buffalo Bore ammo being a new, stronger, more powerful .380 round (also known as the 9MM SHORT), making pistols of this caliber much more of a defense POCKET PISTOL CARRY or home defense weapon. I've order more of Massad Ayoob's books but learned NOT TO get his 5th edition digest and his 6th edition,RIP OFF/just one! (DEFERENT COVERS-SAME BOOKS). Others due recommend the whole read of 1st edition threw 5th, just not the 6th edition. One of them goes for hundreds of dollars if you can still get it. A book I also bought with this is 'Complete Guide to COMPACT HANDGUNS' is a terrific book I will use to reference guns for years to come (by Gene Gangarosa). Lots to know about concealed carry and this book seems to at least touch on most issues of carry. Long read for a long winter, I could of given it 5 stars, it is that informative.
