Garrett Hack's book is a complete encyclopedia on hand planes. I enjoy his writing style which is factual, informative, and interesting. He describes how the seemingly archaic plane is really a precision device which can outperform power tools in accuracy and quality of surface finish. Hack builds on the mystique with his description of near silence in the shop as his hand plane whooses across the wood's surface, producing ultra-thin shavings while converging on the perfect fit. It's a story about craftsmanship through the ages, the art of using one's hands to produce something of quality, and the dual interests of collecting and using these very basic yet fascinating tools. A terrific book for any woodworker or for anyone intriqued by the history and use of the hand plane.
