Book Reviews of The Hard Way (Jack Reacher, No. 10

Book Review: G.I. Jack- Action Hero
Summary: 4 Stars

Reacher's back and this time it's personal....no, wait a minute. It's always personal and oh yeah, with a vengence. Hey, let's face it, Jack Reacher is our new action hero. Bigger than life, better than the bad guys and able to leap tall plots in a single bound but that's what we want and that's what we expect with the series.
If you're true fan the book won't disappoint. If you're a marginal fan you may whine a little asking 'How can he do this or that when others can't?' It's simple: he's Jack Reacher.
Like John Wayne, Jack Bauer, Obi Wan, Dirty Harry, Chuck Norris and Rambo Jack Reacher looms larger than life and should, quite frankly, in an escapist thriller. It's fast, furious, action packed and with an assortment of bad guys (this time it's a host of Mercenaries) that Reacher takes on.
A NY Times critic gave a backhanded compliment to Lee Child saying he's 'The best thriller writer of the moment.' Yeah, well it's book ten in this series that runs into the bestselling category so the moment seems to have some staying power.
It's a thriller folks with a noteworthy lead character and like our other action heroes I'm guessing we'll soon see Jack Reacher on the big screen.
THE HARD WAY is a good thriller. Whether it's Child's 'Best' in the series is something only you can determine and usually only after you've read the others.
A good read.

Book Review: Another Fantastic Reacher Novel
Summary: 5 Stars

The book that I had been saving for vacation was The Hard Way by Lee Child. There is nothing like having a Reacher novel while sitting on the beach.

Reacher is in New York, enjoying an espresso in a coffee house, when he notices a man walk up to a car, open it, and drive away. There was just something about the man that made Reacher notice (and as an ex-MP, Reacher is very good at noticing things). A day later, while Reacher is sitting in the same cafe, a very military-type person comes in asking questions of the wait staff. Reacher is pointed out as someone that was in the cafe the prior evening. Thus, begins the latest Reacher novel. What follows is probably the best Reacher novel from Lee Child. Reacher finds himself helping a mercenary, Edward Lane, and his ex-Special Forces employees find Edward's kidnapped wife and daughter. Unlike other times he has helped people, this time Edward is going to pay Reacher a lot of money for his assistance.

This book moves fast, all over New York City and the English countryside. I really enjoyed some of the small details, such as Reacher's problems with technology that we take for granted. It was also fun reading about Reacher interacting with the mercenaries. They all think that they can take him, but Reacher is not to be underestimated.

A highly recommended novel from Lee Child.

Book Review: I WAS JUST DRINKING A CUP OF COFFEE WHEN ......
Summary: 4 Stars

Like most of the "kick butt and take names" heroes of books and movies, Jack Reacher, protagonist in The Hard Way, is representative of the typical masculine fantasy (think Mark Wahlberg in Shooter.....or maybe Bruce Willis on steroids). That is not to say that Reacher would not be a welcome visitor to some women's fantasies, because I'm sure he would.

An ex-military MP, with powers of observation few mortals possess, Reacher is a "will-o-the-wisp" with no particular place he calls home. In this episode, his temporary "home" is New York City, and Lee Child does an outstanding job of capturing the atmosphere of the city as well as the character of the man.

Reacher is a man who seems to "fall" into situations by chance rather than by design. This particular fall has him embroiled in the search and rescue of two kidnapping victims. Watching his thought processes as he come to wrong conclusions, retraces his steps and adjusts his conclusions is fascinating. Some of his solutions are downright brutal, but then again justice must be served and he is ready to do whatever it takes to get the job done....even if it means doing it "The Hard Way".

Book Review: The Lee Child Travel Guide to New York City
Summary: 2 Stars

Well, Jack's still cool, but the Reacher plots continue to sink deeper down the septic tank. What is there to take away from this plot? Thing 1: Lee Child loves being a "New Yorker" (expat fake that he is), so get ready to learn the names or numbers of every street on the swanky Lower West Side (which today is inundated with blue-blood European neo-colonizers). Thing 2: U.S. supported elite ex-military mercenary guys (think "Blackwater") are behind most of the violence that goes on in really violent places like Africa and the Middle East. Thing 3: Reacher never changes his clothes, rarely showers, goes around covered in blood, guts, and gore, and no one seems to care or even notice... especially sophisticated women who love the fact that the only clean thing about him are his teeth (though he never seems to have toothpaste). Thing 4: Reacher never works-out but somehow gets stronger and more massive with age. Breaking someone's wrist is as easy as snapping a match for old man Reacher. Summary: I still like Reacher in spite of himself, and will keep reading the series, but do hope that Child comes up with some better material for Reacher to work with.

Book Review: Electrifying Climax!
Summary: 5 Stars

Jack Reacher, like John "Lilly" Lelankevitch Evil, Be Gone, walks tall amongst other men. Guys like these are drawn to evildoers and leave dark justice, vengeful mayhem and a certain silencing of evil in their wake. Lee Child has created a character in Jack Reacher who conveys a very comfortable confidence in his ability to handle almost any dire situation that confronts him. The Hard Way is riveting and yet the author also equips his hero with comic relief capability that gives readers a moment to catch their breath. This is a fun book to read and the climax is one of the best in the genre, drawing you so completely into the scene that you'll be looking over your shoulder to make sure there are no bad guys sneaking up on you. Don't worry, with Reacher there...you're covered. You should also check out Evil, Be Gone for another tough guy tale.
