Book Reviews of The Healthy Slow CookerBook Review: Delicious, healthy food for working families Summary: 5 Stars
This cookbook asks you to brown the meat and veggies ahead of time. This makes a tremendous difference in the taste. No gray, mushy meat here. I do the prep work the evening before (usually less than a 1/2 hour) then set it to cook in the morning. OK, yes, I do put it in the 'frig over night. I find I prefer to cut the time by one to two hours from the one Ms. Findlayson recommends.
I also like the nutrition information provided for each recipe.
My college bound son asked for this cookbook and a crockpot of his own. That's as high praise as I know of.
Book Review: some prep involved but great recipes Summary: 4 Stars
I have made several dishes from this book. Would make them all again. Only downside: most require some prep on stovetop before throwing the stuff in the slow cooker - about 20 min on average. Well worth it since the food tastes like you spent an hour cooking it. She explains a lot about the nutrition, which is a plus. Good range of ethnic cuisines but nothing too exotic (ingredient wise) or complicated to make. Useful side notes regarding substituting ingredients. Instructions show you where to stop if you plan assemble and refrigerate overnight and cook next day. Definitely recommend it.
Book Review: Too Difficult! Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this book for the express purpose of throwing everything into a slow cooker and leaving for the workday to come home to a great smelling, great tasting dish. The recipes sound fantastic and I'm sure they come out well too, but almost every recipe starts with "brown the onions and garlic in a skillet", "toast the seeds until brown", etc.., etc...so again almost *always*, there is way more prep work than just chopping up your ingredients and throwing them in. Now again, I haven't tried a recipe yet, but my reason for buying this book was simplicity. It is not simple.
Book Review: Not for regular use. Summary: 2 Stars
Sadly, I have to agree with the reviews that say the recipes are overcomplicated and not for daily-type use. I was highly disappointed by this cookbook. Many of the recipes require a ridiculous amount of prep and effort (toasting seeds in a pan and grinding them with a mortar and pestle -- talk about completely missing the point of a slow cooker!) Quite a few use hard-to-find or specialty ingredients that can leave you scouring all the stores in town to find what you need and then paying an arm and a leg for it. No thanks. I'll be checking out some other slow cooker cookbooks.
Book Review: I like this book alot Summary: 5 Stars
I hate to cook, and I love this book. I get home at 8 or 9 PM on some nights. So this is great for those nights that my husband gets home first. If I don't use this, we end up with pizza or Chinese food or starving. So it's a better option than those. It's not as much prep as people complain about. I figure, it's 30-minute meals, but you do the work up front. And it's ready when you come home. How much do you LOVE that?! I've been able to substitute for things that seem difficult to do, and things come out well. I'd say it's a good investment.
