Book Reviews of The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching: Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, and LiberationBook Review: Practical Guide to Buddha's Teachings and Message Summary: 5 Stars
This book provides refreshing insight into the main pillars of Buddhism and their practical applications in our personal lives to transform ourselves. Mr. Hanh isn't too philosophical nor too wordy, he doesn't bend the original message of the Buddha to fit a "new" vision of Buddhism as many present day authors on Buddhism do. He blends the original teachings and foundations of Buddhism with insights of his own, which clearly reveals he has trodden the path of Buddhism that he discusses. Mr. Hanh is credible, accurate source/commentary on teachings of Buddha and "points" the way just as Buddha intended to. Get this book if you are even remotely interested in Buddhism, this book serves as a good/credible overview of Buddhism for those new to the subject and also refreshing and meaningful for the advanced aspirant/student.
Book Review: The Quintessential Buddhism Book ! Summary: 5 Stars
Thich Nhat Hanh is a living realized Buddhist master. His words are not only inspiring, wise, and profound, but scholarly. He takes the myriad Buddhist teachings and refines, translates them into living gospel suitable for todays' world that should be required reading for everyone.Hinduism (yoga), is the other side of the proverbial spiritual coin, and should be read to integrate it with Buddhism. Sri Chinmoy is the living spiritual master here, and his books ("Commentaries on the Vedas, Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita") and ("Meditation") should also be read by everyone. Other authors/books; Juan Mascaro ("The Dhammapada" and "The Bhagavad Gita"), and Prem Prakash ("The Yoga of Spiritual Devotion- a modern translation of the Narada Bhakti Sutras").
Book Review: Accessible and complete introduction to Buddhism written in a simple, clear, and concise manner Summary: 5 Stars
The Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk uses his simple, straightforward writing to explain the very core of Buddhism, presenting Buddhism as way of thinking and a well-traveled path toward enlightenment.
He begins with the Turning the Dharma Wheel Sutra, the classic tale of Buddha's awakening, and then proceeds through the basic core concepts of Buddhist terminology: Four Noble Truths, The Noble Eightfold Path, The Three Dharma Seals, The Three Doors of Liberation, The Twelve Links of Causation, The Three Jewels, The Six Harmonies, The Five Powers, The Five Wonderful Precepts and The Four Immeasurable Minds.
I found this book to be the most accessible and most complete introduction to Buddhism. Thich Nhat Hanh explains things in a simple, clear, and concise manner.
Book Review: great book for any level Summary: 5 Stars
this book is great for anyone who is interested in learning about the buddhist teachings and philosophy. i can understand how it could be a little overwhelming all the information in this book, but it covers all the basics and answers a lot of questions. its definitely a book you can read over and over again. it goes into depth about the different realms of buddhism, has some poem written by thich nhat hanh, and gives you enlightenment on how to bring buddhism into your everyday life. i think this writer is one of the best of whom i have ever read. he is inspiring and its no wonder he was nominated for the nobel peace price, and is also considered a living buddha. all the books i have read of his are fabulous and insightful, but this one is among my favorites.
Book Review: A Sutra of Our Time Summary: 5 Stars
Walpola Rahula's excellent "What the Buddha Taught" is often cited as the perfect introduction to Buddhism. In my estimation, "Heart of the Buddha's Teaching" is at least as good.
More than simply providing essential information on Buddhism, more than even outlining and explaining the Buddha's practical instructions on how to transform suffering into happiness, this book truly inspires the reader to follow the teachings. As I was reading it I really found myself thinking, "Yes. This is a good way to live. I want very much to live like this, for the sake of myself and those close to me."
I know it's a cliche to say, "This book changed my life," but seriously. I live differently now because I read this book.
