Book Review: So, So Good

I should probably feel bad that I ignored my husband and children for seven straight hours while I read THE HOLLOW, the second book in Nora Roberts' THE SIGN OF SEVEN trilogy.
I don't.
Seriously, once you start in on this story, featuring Fox O'Dell and Layla Darnell, which is even better than the first book, you won't be able to stop reading. Of course, I'll no doubt say that the third book in the series, which doesn't come out until December (the horror!!), is even better than this one, but I'll deal with that when it happens.
Fox, Cal, Gage, Layla, Quinn, and Cybil are all back, all working to prepare themselves to destroy the demon that will be coming to do his dirty work during The Seven (see first book for definitions, as I'm not going to tell you!). There's more evil, more horror, and more information learned this time around. Basically, it's the first book amped up a bit.
Trust me, you want to read THE HOLLOW. You want to ignore your husband and children for a few hours. You want to scream when you realize you're not going to get the rest of the story for seven more loooong months.

I have read everything Nora Roberts has written, even some of her very early work. Through it all I have seen the progression of her work as a product of her own evolution and growth as an author and the times surrounding her work. I have always enjoyed her voice, style, and imagination, but lately her work has become so much less than she is, I believe, capable of. The Sign of Seven trilogy is, in theory, an interesting and fun idea, however it just didn't reach early Nora Roberts standards. There was little, if any, character building or progression. The backdrop, the mystery, was very well done and engaging, however the protagonists were cardboard cutouts. You never get a sense of who they are, what they want, why they are together, or even what makes them different from the other characters around them. This is such a shame. Usually I do not write reviews as I much prefer the idea of letting everyone choose thier own books and love them or hate them on their own, but in this instance, in my sorrow and disappointment at the level of workmanship being put out by one of my favorite authors, I felt compelled to share my opinion.Book Review: A bit more comical than scary

This book was at least better than the first book, which isn't saying much. My favorite line is Gage's, "Are we going to talk it (evil demon boy) to death?" Well, apparently so, because, mostly, all our six happy friends do is sit and talk . . . and talk . . . and talk. Then there's a demon attack, and then they talk some more. The three women all have demon blood in them, and not a one of them turns evil. They discuss how it's a possibility, but does it happen? Of course not. The only interesting story will likely be Gage's in the third book. The other five characters are all nearly interchangable and I never really could make myself care about any of them. The dialog tends to be corny, unbelievable and hard to follow--who's talking, incomplete sentences. And I'm sorry, but there's not much plot--Evil demon boy does nasty stuff and guy #2 and girl #2 get together because it's their book, so they have to. I'll read the third book, but then I'm done. No more Nora paranormal romance stories for me.Book Review: Well....

...where to start? As a longtime Nora Robert's fan, I have been disappointed in the steady decline of the books she has been putting out. I did read Blood Brothers, and while I found it ridiculous, I am compelled to finish a series and so I read The Hollow. I wouldn't have thought it could be worse that Blood Brothers, but wow was I wrong. To begin with Layla is a simpering idiot, and that's being kind. More importantly, the diaglogue. I'm not even sure that schmaltzy is a real word, but it fits perfectly here. Who talks like that? I don't know anybody as "in tune" with themselves and each other as these people.
This is all supposing you're ok with the theme of the series, being demons and guardians and the like. I'm ok with a little "pschic" story line here and there, but we're entering science fiction here.
I'm ashamed to say that I will be reading the 3rd book when it's available, and I can only hope that it will be slightly less cheesey than the others.

I hate to give Nora a less-than-great review, but I think she's really just phoning it in with this trilogy. I've read her for 15-20 years and have definitely noticed a slide in the last 3-4 years. I know she's very prolific, I know that I'm not going to love every book she writes, but I am actually not sure I'm even going to finish this trilogy, which is a huge disappointment for me.
The characters are repeats and not all that interesting or likable. In previous trilogies, she would give each couple it's "own" book, but here the story is more concurrent and often confusing because I don't feel like I know any of the characters well and so I'm not getting the jokes or comments.
And I don't *mind* paranormal stuff, but that's just about all she writes anymore. What happened to a good, old-fashioned story without the gimmicks? All in all, blah is the best I can do... I wish it were better.
