Book Reviews of The Hour I First Believed: A NovelBook Review: Lamb all over the map Summary: 4 Stars
I enjoyed Wally Lamb's novels "She's Come Undone" and "I Know This Much is True", but think this one is a bit unfocused. There are still several moments of clarity and great insight in "The Hour I First Believed" but the book travels an overly circuitous path to get to an only moderately satifactory ending. Some of the reviewers here seem bitter that the main character expressed his dislike for Bush and Cheney, and their criticism should be taken with a grain of salt. I would tag this as Wally Lamb's "East of Eden", a bit contrived but still masterfully written.
Book Review: Such anticipation and yet, disappointed Summary: 3 Stars
Let me start by saying, I love Wally Lamb. I tell everyone to read his books. "I know This Much is True" is one of my all time favorites! I waited...and waited...and waited for this new novel to come out and now, I am saddly disappointed. To be honest, I'm over 200 pages in...and I do not even have an urge to finish it. Frankly, its depressing...and not in an engaging way...and I am not enjoying "getting to know the characters". Perhaps you may like it...but, I will wait for his next novel and hope for the best.
Book Review: Intriguing Summary: 4 Stars
There were lots of intriguing intertwining stories in this novel. Lamb has a great way of making his characters real. There was some rather crude material in the book I didn't care for, but really did have a purpose for character development. It also lets you into the world of PTSD and helped me full understand the weight of such a disorder. Overall, I thought it was a beautiful book.
Book Review: Wonderful! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first book that I have read by Wally Lamb. I found it to be quite a journey. I had to read it in spurts, because once I picked it up I had a hard time putting it down. I am amazed by the time and research regarding recent events and the characters lives that shaped this novel. Thank you for writing "The Hour I First Believed". I will seek out more books by Mr. Lamb.
Book Review: Disappointing if you have read This much I know is true Summary: 3 Stars
I love Lamb's This much I know is true, and I you have read and loved that one, then this one will likely disappoint. I was so happy to see that Lamb finally came out with a new book. Although the storyline is a powerful and emotional topic, I feel as though Lamb fails to capture those emotions like he has done so successfully with his earlier novels.
