Book Reviews of The House on Fortune Street: A NovelBook Review: Literary Page Turner Summary: 5 Stars
I read a review of "The House on Fortune Street" in the Times and thought, "this is for me." I love stories about how women navigate the world, and this one did not disappoint. The two main characters -- best friends -- are polar opposites and finely drawn. It is a particularly interesting look at secrets, misunderstandings between people who love each other, what fear motivates people to do, and the repercussions of all of the above. For me it was also a page turner...I could not put my Kindle down! I was dying to know how everyone's story turned out. This is certainly the best book I have read this year.
Book Review: Not So Simple Twists of Fate Summary: 5 Stars
The House on Fortune Street is a dazzling accomplishment! With consummate skill and sensitivity, Livesey intertwines the stories of her characters, revealing lives that come to seem both psychologically predestined and utterly, startlingly, subject to the whims of fate. This is a gripping novel that yields immediate pleasure and also lingers in the mind, leaving one wondering anew about the vicissitudes of love and the curses and blessings of life.
Book Review: Different. Summary: 4 Stars
Well written, intelligent and truly absorbing---but most of all, it is different. I felt that I got to know each of the four main characters in the book (warts and all.)
The book doesn't preach, and it took me a week after I finished to realize it's about acceptance and forgiveness. I want to give 4 1/2 stars (I reserve five stars for only very few books.)
Anyway, this book does not disappoint.
Book Review: classic livesey Summary: 5 Stars
I am always so pleased when Margot Livesey publishes a new book, especially so this time. This is a beautifully written novel that is really smart about people, about their motivations and desires. Livesey handle's each of the main character's perspectives with insight and generosity yet is never afraid to glimpse human darkness as well as light.
Book Review: Met the author yesterday... Summary: 4 Stars
I was not going to buy this book. Then I met Margot Livesey at a book signing yesterday (shout out to Newtonville Books!). She was just delightful. I enjoyed hearing her reading and meeting her. :) So I bought the book. Thank you to all of you for your reviews here...I was wondering what folks thought that had already read it.
