Book Reviews of The Housekeeper and the ProfessorBook Review: A Novel that stays with you long after you finished the book Summary: 4 Stars
Very much in the style of "All the Names" by Samarago this story evolves around four characters that are identified simply as: I, professor, the sister-in-law, and root. Like other great Japanese writers Ogawa defly captures the atmospheric sense by almost humbly describing houses and the daily activities of the housekeeper. The result is a jewel that slowly reveals itself to the reader. The surprising aspect is the rolle mathemathics plays in the story. A wonderful book!
Book Review: Endearing, A Japanese jewel Summary: 5 Stars
For all who have lived in and loved Japan this will be almost as good as another long visit there. A thoughtful insite into not only the Japaneese & the way of life. Not a love story but a story of loving service given to those who need special care. The math that is tucked here and there in the book makes one almost want to go back to school to learn more. A guide for all of us to help us remember to be loving and kind to one another.
Book Review: An Unexpected Surprise Summary: 5 Stars
This was such an unusual and thoroughly fascinating look into how human relationships can develop in spite of a debilitating mental condition. Although I never was an exhuberant student of math, I found myself spending a great deal of time going over the mathematical problems presented by the professor. I truly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it as an easy read and one that you'll want to read from cover to cover.
Book Review: The Maths Teacher and Ogawa Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this book after is was featured on The First Tuesday Book Club on ABC TV in Australia. It sounded like something I would enjoy, and I wasn't disappointed. Only a short book, it is what I would describe as "lyrical". It is a gentle journey. It doesn't seem to have lost anything in translation.I enjoyed the "mathematical" bits, but think anyone not interested in mathematics would enjoy this too. A treasure.
