Book Reviews of The Hundred DressesBook Review: A sweet and sad story. Summary: 3 Stars
Soon after starting at a new school, Wanda becomes the focus of a daily taunting by the other girls. Wanda wears the same--albeit clean and pressed--blue dress to school every day and, on top of that, the kids think that she has a strange last name: "Petronski." On the way to school one day, Wanda feels less shy than normal and whispers to Peggy, the prettiest and most popular girl in class, that she has one hundred dresses at home in her closet. Clearly, she's not telling the truth, but Peggy doesn't let the subject drop; instead, she asks Wanda every single day thereafter how many dresses she has...and Wanda always answers the same way. Following her answer, the girls laugh and then ignore her.
Peggy's best friend Maddie doesn't like how the girls follow Peggy's lead and make fun of Wanda. Maddie knows that she should say something to Peggy about stopping the teasing, but Maddie is afraid that Peggy will start making fun of her instead!
When Wanda and her family suddenly move away, Maddie feels awful that she never had a chance to apologize to her and must deal with her feelings of guilt and shame over her behavior.
This is a quick read that will leave the reader thinking long after the story ends. For readers seeking a sweet story about friendship and acceptance, recommend this.
Book Review: Seeing Beyond the Superficial Summary: 5 Stars
This chapter book tells the story of Wanda, a daughter of a poor Polish immigrant father, starting at a new school. She soon becomes the focus of daily taunting and teasing by two other girls at school. Wanda wears the same pale blue dress everyday and the other kids think that she has a funny last name, "Petronski". As the story develops, Wanda claims that she owns one hundred dresses in her closet: "a hundred dresses. All linded up in my closet - some silk, some velvet, some satin, all brightly colored and beautiful" (Estes 2004). But, Maddie and Peggy are a bit skeptical since they have only seen Wanda wear one dress to school and begin to constantly question her. When Wanda missed three days of school, Maddie thinks that her and Peggy's questioning really hurt Wanda. It turns out that Wanda's family moves away due to all of the teasing and taunting of their family. At the same time of their move, the announcement of the winner of the art contest. Peggy and Maddie are surprised to hear that Wanda's one hundred drawings of one hundred dresses win the art contest. This was such a beautiful story for young readers, especially girls. It teaches children to speak up for others who are being bullied and to never judge someone just by their appearance.
Book Review: The Hundred Dresses Summary: 5 Stars
The 100 Dresses
By
Naurtica
I read the book The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes. In this story Wanda says she has One Hundred Dresses but she doesn't. She wears the same blue dress every day and it seams like she doesn't and her friends don't believe it because it is not true. The theme in this story is don't lie just tell the truth. One of the messages is don't compete with your friends if you don't think they are not going to be your friend any more. Don't lie just to make someone be your friends tell your feelings. Think of someone that lied to you how would you feel? I didn't like Wanda because she lied and nobody can have One Hundred Dresses unless you' rich. Wanda represents sadness because her friends tease her. This makes Wanda very sad. The best characters are her friends because they try to get the truth out of her. Before I read the book I thought that it was about friendship but now that I have read the book my schema has changed and now I think it is about telling the truth and not lying and you need to see to believe. I recommend this book to people in 3rd to 4th grade. So I would give this book a 3 rating.
Book Review: the hundred dresses Summary: 4 Stars
The title of this book is "The Hundred Dresses" by Eleanor Estes. I give it 4 stars.
The reason I give this book four stars is because it was good and very descriptive but it was not very interesting. The book was dull and just went on and on with not a very good plot if any. This book was about a girl was made fun of because of what she said. Girls would tease her asking how many dresses she had in her closet. When she answered this question by saying she had a hundred dresses the girls would laugh and tease her. They also teased her because she had a funny last name. One day the girl did not come to school. When there was a drawing contest at school where the girls had to draw dresses she won. Everybody realized that they had done wrong and hoped that she forgave them.
Other great and esciting titles that i reccomend are catherine called birdy, bronx masquarade, and the midwifes apprentice. I am a student in 7th grade i am in an aig english class, and love to read. If you enjoy short, purposeful books, you will enjoy this one.
Book Review: Review from Books That Heal Kids Summary: 5 Stars
This is a solid resource I use with my elementary school bullying curriculum for grades 3-5. Some children are relentlessly picked on. I am usually part of the healing process when it comes time for apologies and making amends in these situations. But what if you don't get the chance to say you're sorry? The Hundred Dresses is a stand out read in my opinion because of the remorse factor in one of the characters. She feels awful about her behavior. I live for the discussion this draws out of students. There's a bit of a mean girls theme going on in the story. It is so sad to see a group mess with someone's feelings. Often times, those participating don't want to be part of the teasing and deep down wish they could put a stop to it. The Hundred Dresses speaks directly to those students. There is an energy in the room when we finish reading. It's a story that increases kindness, empathy, and making amends with those we have injured. I also see groups forming in 4-5 grades so this helps me break down those "clique" barriers. PS. This is a true story!
