Book Reviews of The Hundred DressesBook Review: Enduring, compelling, hopeful Summary: 5 Stars
I haven't read this book since I was in the second grade myself, but I remember it well. The girl with only one dress was very much like me at the time. The book portrays her with dignity-- she maintains that she does indeed have one hundred dresses and does not let her teasers take away the comfort of her own imagination. When she disappears from school, and Maddie and Peggy go to her empty home, they find the hundred dresses-- carefully drawn sketches in colored pencil on scraps of paper. As others have mentioned, this book will allow children to see the pain that is caused by teasing. But it also provides comfort, I believe, to children who are the "different" ones. Wanda is not a victim, but instead leaves for each of her teasers a gift of peace-- thier picture sketched faintly inside two of the dresses. Wanda humbles them with the beauty of her own humanity-- beauty that transcends poverty and discrimination.
Book Review: Beautiful Story!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a beautiful story!! It is about a little girl who immigrates from Poland to America with her brother and her father. She is met with some unkind treatment from students in her class. Eventually, they realize their behavior was inappropriate. I teach first grade and my students LOVED this story! It is a longer book and I had to read it to my students and I updated some of the terms but it was a great culmination to a unit on Poland. My students felt so badly for poor little Wanda in the story. This story is also an EXCELLENT book on bullying. The kids seem to understand the feelings of Wanda. It can also be a great addition to the 100th day of school for grades 1-6. My kids created 100 dresses and we displayed them in the hall. The boys and girls alike were eager to complete the 100 different dresses. Buy the Activity Guide too!!
Book Review: BEST BOOK EVER Summary: 5 Stars
This book takes you back to when you are a little kid. School can be tough, even when you don't exactly fit in as well as you wish you would. Wanda Petronski is different from all the little girls in her class, and yet, they seem oddly attracted to her. They bully her constantly and yet she seems indifferent, as if she has a secret that keeps her happy. I think this book helps people of all ages understand that it is okay to be different.
This book is easy to read and the way Estes describes everything and everybody transports you to where everything is taking place. This book is inspirational and strongly urges people to stand up against all forms of bullying. I have to say this is one of my favorite books by this wonderful author.

Book Review: Ariana's 5 Star Review (3rd Grader) Summary: 5 Stars
Do you want to read a book that has a lesson at the end? Then the story of The Hundred Dresses is perfect for you. The book is about when there are two girls who keep making fun of the character Wanda until she moves out of town. They keep teasing her because Wanda wears the same blue dress every day to school, but Wanda says that she has one hundred dresses all lined up in her closet. You'll have to read this amazing book to find out what happens with Wanda. My favorite part was when the girls learned a lesson, because it is not nice to tease your friends. I recommend this book to people who like books with a lesson at the end. Or you might want to give this book to your neighborhood bully who needs to learn to be nice. Let him figure out the story's lesson for himself. This is a five star book!
Book Review: Useful for Book Reports Summary: 3 Stars
I found the ending of the book to be somewhat exciting because it left the audience wondering whether or not Wanda would ever come back. The story is about a girl named Wanda who claims to have one hundred dresses, but no one believes her. She ends up moving to a different town and leaves her school. Throughout the story, there are two girls who go about trying to find Wanda. When they return to school, they come to find that Wanda had won the picture contest. Her picture was made up of one hundred pictures of one hundred dresses and when two particular students looked closely at the pictures, they found themselves in the dresses. I read this book for a book report and it isn't one that I would typically read however, I enjoyed reading it. I hope you also enjoy reading The Hundred Dresses.
