Book Reviews of The Hundred Dresses

Book Review: The Hundred Dresses
Summary: 4 Stars

Every child at one time or another has been teased or mocked by other children, particularly in public schools. Those of us who have witnessed it, suffered it, or may have even done it, will remember the experience as painful, humiliating, and regrettable. The Hundred Dresses helps children see from another child's perspective this damaging behavior. Even thought this story was written over six decades ago, the materialistic theme of judging others by their clothing is still prevalent today. Throughout the story, the author has a cunning way of developing the theme so that the reader can relate to each of the characters: Wanda and how it feels to be the outcaste, Peggy and it feels to be the bully, and finally Maddie and how it feels to be guilty for letting the mistreatment go so far.

Book Review: Enjoyed more as an adult
Summary: 5 Stars

I rescued this book from my childhood collection, where it was languising in my mother's basement and then I read it aloud to my 3 and a half year old daughter-- mostly for myself, though, since I am good and sick of the Berenstain Bears by now.

My copy of the book has a rather understated cover and I didn't recall the book from my childhood, so I was not expecting much.

I was pleasantly surprised by a beautiful and sad book about how cruel children can be. The book's lesson isn't heavy-handed, the reading is quick and the kids are real and could be any kids, from any place and time.

I am sure I enjoyed this book more as an adult than I did as a child. Sometimes the book with the unassuming cover is the best on the shelf.

Book Review: This book may cause tears!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Ron Clark mentioned in his book, "Essential 55," that he reads, "The Hundred Dresses," to his class to help his students understand and not allow bullying. This is a great book. I had tears and so did a lot of my students. This book is an easy read and easy to understand. The story helps

-demonstrate to the reader that no matter how poor you are, you don't have to look or act poor.

-shows the reader that a bully is not always someone that gets in your face and calls you names.

-and reveals that watching someone being bullied without helping sometimes makes you just a guilty as the bully.

This book has characters that appear real and reflect on their decisions. Please remember to have tissue!

Book Review: Great book
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book for my 9 year old's summer reading assignment and we read it together. I thought it was a great story and recommend it for both boys and girls. The message of the book is on target for that age group (3rd-4th grade) and touches on tolerance, friendship, and forgiveness. One of the characters in the book struggles with her feelings about following the crowd and teasing another student - and works through reconciling both her own emotions and her reactions to what had happened. The book was thought-provoking and provided the opportunity to apply the situations to what children may experience today. My child and I both enjoyed this book and were pleasantly pleased with the ending.

Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 1 Stars

This book has a lot of build up surrounding the dresses... are they real, imaginary, did she make them, buy them, or inherit them? Teasing from the main character's peers made me as the reader wait in suspense to find out what the dresses really were and to look forward to the girl standing up for herself. When we finally find out about the dresses, however, I found it to be a bit anticlimactic with very little resolution to the issues of bullying, teasing, gossiping, and stereotyping. Not impressed by this apparent "classic."
