Book Reviews of The HusbandBook Review: first ever let down Summary: 2 Stars
I have to say that this is the first Koontz book I have ever failed to finish. I'm going on vacation soon; I plan to drink all night, everynight. Maybe this will provide the inspiration to finish the story. I love his stories enough to suspend my disbelief long enough to finish and appreciate them. With this one it was impossible. Could be that he is being pushed to author too many books within a certain period of time. He is getting old, after all. The more he writes before he is incapable the more his publisher and his estate benefit; though it is difficult to pigeon-hole Koontz as a money grabber.
I love his stories so I won't post details of my disappointment, I don't wish to spar with legions of my own, fellow fans. I hope he gets an eye on this, decides to put his foot down, get through his current contractual obligations(I am not a tree hugging anarchist, I expect him to follow through on his contracts), and settle into his usual, incredible, and thoroughly entertaining stories.
Book Review: What would you do for love? Summary: 4 Stars
"What Would You Do For Love?"
"Would You Die for Love? Would You Kill?"
"They thought they knew the kind of man he was, and maybe they did. But they didn't know the kind of man he could become when the life of his wife was in the balance."
Dean Koontz takes a break from his usual supernatural mystery/suspense stories with the tale of "The Husband". As always, it is well written. We travel into the heart and mind of Mitchell Rafferty, a gardener and a happily married man, who is very much in love with his wife Holly.
Primarily a suspense story, it carries you along with Mitch on a dual journey of trying to get his wife back and how he becomes different man in the process. A mystery unfolds along the way as to why they would want to kidnap the wife of a gardener and Mitch learns what he would do for love. In short, what it means to him to be "The Husband".
Highly recommend this book.
Enjoy!
Book Review: Wish I was as well-versed as some reviewers... Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this book! What a shocker. Who would have thought about this entire scenario.
Mr. Koontz, I complement you on your style and your wonderful way with words.
I wish I had 1/100% of your gift.
That said:
In the words of a plain person... Prepare to be unprepared to what happens from, oh lets see, about page 2?
I don't want to give away anything... so I won't say much other than it was a GREAT read. Soaked it up in two nights!!!
I was sad when I finished it, and panicked to see if I had another Dean Koontz novel around. I didn't! I had no reason to live unless I went to sleep promptly planning on heading to the store the next morning.
Thanks Mr. Koontz, been reading your books for years!!! Keep on~~~and thanks for sharing your gift of the written word for us.
You don't need an imagination, as you superbly supplied it....
Book Review: My first and last Koontz novel Summary: 1 Stars
I had just finished reading Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot when I started reading The Husband, so Mr. Koontz had big shoes to fill. Did he rise to the challenge? Unfortunately, no. I found The Husband's synopsis intriguing although I thought the title itself was quite generic and unimaginative. I never made it past the first few chapters of The Husband. When the kidnapper called Mitch and told him they had his beloved wife, he seemed more interested in the dude who'd gotten shot--the one with the dog. Mitch waited around for the cops to come and all that. But my thoughts are that he should have taken his butt home immediately to see what the hell was going on...even if nothing was going on there. Instead, he kept lurking around the crime scene recycling a bunch of boring scenarios in his head. This book made no sense so I put it down. It makes me mad that just because Koontz is a bestselling author, he gets to put out trash such as this.
Book Review: HOLD ON TO YOUR SEAT... Summary: 5 Stars
I used to be a big Dean Koontz fan, but drifted away from his books for a time. I've been yanked back into the fold by THE HUSBAND. I think this is Koontz at his finest--not since LIGHTNING have I been so captivated. Another reviewer described the novel as "a roller coaster ride", and it couldn't be said better. Fasten your shoulder-restraint, grab onto the lapbar, and make sure you have plenty of time to read or you'll miss appointments, forget to pick your kids up at school and get no sleep. Koontz is a maestro with words, and he creates a symphony of atmosphere, adventure, personalities and terror. He plants pictures in your mind and drops you smack-dab in the middle of the spookiness. Reading his books is a learning experience too--I'm always smarter after a Koontz novel. This brilliant man has crafted a riveting thriller by knitting the dead-calm mundane into stunning, creepy horror; pulling us along like leaves in a river.
