Book Reviews of The Husband

Book Review: Enjoyable and thrilling ride with "The Husband"
Summary: 4 Stars

Dean Koontz has also been able to create some terrific characters and great plots - but not always in the same book. That's certainly not an issue with "The Husband". Koontz has done a great job melding both factors together into a memorable reading experience.

Without going into a plot re-hash (which has already been done hundreds of times in this forum) let me suffice to say that the book zooms away from its literary launch pad from page 1 and continues right through the last word. Koontz does a wonderful job putting an "ordinary Joe" in a compromising situation that changes him forever. It will be easy for most readers to relate to the situation and compare how they would act when faced with the same scenario. Some very unexpected plot twists crank up the interest level in the novel and the end is a satisfying one.

If you're a Koontz fan, you will definitely want to grab a copy of "The Husband"!

Book Review: The Lawfully Wedded Husband
Summary: 5 Stars

Dean Koontz is back in the saddle, Ladies and Gentlemen! I read this book on a 72-hour road trip. I even sat outside of the cottage reading while everyone was inside with a drink!

Call me a nerd, but I carried this book in my purse for a reason. Many Koontz fans have said that this book returned Dean back to his plot-twisting roots. I couldn't agree more.

I found myself identifying with the lead character, Mitch, and his wife, Holly. You see, they are 27 years old, no kids yet, and soooo in love. Of course Mitch is going to find a way to get 2 million dollars to save his wife from freaky kidnappers. Oh, by the way, if you know Koontz...the kidnapper in The Husband is creepier than Edgler Vess from Intensity.

Why would kidnappers abduct the wife of a gardener with $11,000 in the bank? Read the book, and you mind will attempt to wrap around the thrill ride that is always Koontz.

Book Review: Great up until the lackluster finish
Summary: 4 Stars

This book was excellent up until a very rushed ending where it seemed Koontz was either pressing to meet a deadline or couldn't come up with anything more exciting to write. I love Dean Koontz's books, but having now read 15 of them, I'm beginning to notice a pattern: HIS ENDINGS SUCK! You read and are so gripped throughout only to come upon rushed, unsatisfying, and in many cases too predictable endings. Things are too often easily fixed, villains downfalls are usually documented in 5-8 pages (if that) and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth after having read hundreds of pages of suspense and thrills leading up to these conclusions. To me, the ending is vital and with Koontz, it seems it's the least important part of a book. Nevertheless, THE HUSBAND is worth reading, fast-paced and extremely well-written. If Koontz will spend a little more time on his endings, I would find his books flawless.

Book Review: How much does he really love his wife?
Summary: 5 Stars

And how far will he go to get her back? Mitch is just an ordinary guy living an ordinary life with the woman of his dreams. Life is very good until out-of-nowhere a group of high-tech, calculating psychos kidnap his wife and demand a ransom of two million dollars. Mitch has no clue where a lawn gardener can find that kind of money, but the kidnappers have a well thought out plan that is slowly and painfully revealed in stages. And just when you think you have everything and everyone figured out - bam! Dean Koontz takes us on another wild ride through some unimaginable twists and turns. This is another great masterpiece by the master of mystery! I find it so amazing how this writer can have me doing belly laughs one minute and pulling the covers over my head the next. Make sure you have some reading time on your hands when you pick up this book, because you are not going to want to put it down.

Book Review: A Good Read
Summary: 4 Stars

I read this in one sitting. It was a traditional page turner and falls along Koontz's better efforts. Koontz is such a prolific writer that some of his books are filler, but he took some time with this one. The characters are not as well developed as, for example, the "Odd" characters, but you get more insight about them than you do some characters in his fluff pieces. Mitch is an everyday kind of guy that gets involved in a super extraordinary situation, which is classic Koontz. It is predictably good versus evil and good wins, leaving a trail of blood behind. But again, this is classic Koontz (and Deaver for that matter). It's a quick, entertaining read. One would never miss the characters at the end, but they keep you reading until the end. If you want someone more intricate, read an Elizabeth George novel. But if you want to while away an afternoon on your deck, it's good reading.
