Book Reviews of The HusbandBook Review: The Husband Summary: 5 Stars
This is a true story of the perfect kind of love that anyone would want in a marriage.
A simple gardner, Mitch Rafferty, gets a disturbing phone call from a stranger stating that he has his wife, Holly. Mitch is confused, devastated, and the stranger then tells him that he has less than 3 days to come up with $2 million in cash. Meanwhile, a pedestrian is shot and killed when Mitch dives to take cover. The detective on the case seems to point his finger toward Mitch but more and more twists are told to us.
Mitch only has $11,000 in his checkings and will do anything and everything to get his wife back. Is that enough though?
As the tale spins in this story, Mitch's simple family life seems more than just simple. We learn many unexpected twists and Koontz will keep you up all night long reading this novel full of twists and turns.
Book Review: Just read the first half, then take a nap. Summary: 2 Stars
I absolutely loved the first half of this book. It keeps you guessing, everything is up in the air, and you can cut the tension with a knife.
The second half muddles along like a drunk turtle. The entire plot is uncovered by the halfway point and then it's a slow parade of yawns to the final, predictable conclusion.
It was like Dean Koontz had a dream one night for a book that was fantastic, the only problem was that he woke up only remembering the first half and tried to just "wing it" during the second half.
I love his books. I love him enough to tell the truth, and the truth is tha this one is easily forgotten. It's right in the vein of Velocity and Nice Guy.
Take my advice, read the first half and then take a nap and dream up your own conclusion. I'm sure it'll be just as satisfying as this effort from Mr. Koontz.
Book Review: Not One of Koontz's Best Efforts Summary: 2 Stars
I am honestly shocked by all the five star reviews this book received. I am a big Dean Koontz fan, and I have pretty much read every single one of his books over the years, but I have to say I think this was one of his worst. I don't think it was very original and I kept waiting for some unique plot twist. The storyline with the brother was totally predictable and the storyline with the one kidnapper obsessed with New Mexico was just super annoying in my opinion. I started this book and several weeks went by before I finished it because I just didn't care enough about the story to bother. When I am really into a book, I can't wait to get home from work and keep reading. I hope Koontz gets back to doing what he does best. And no more books about Odd Thomas...the first one was good but Forever Odd was just pointless, so much so that I didn't even buy Brother Odd.
Book Review: Great Koontz novel Summary: 4 Stars
I don't know how old this book is but it should be a movie. It's not one of his horror stories or some weird twilight zone kinda thing, it's just a good story and Koontz is a wonderful storyteller. Mitch is just a regular guy with a regular life until his wife is kidnapped and held for a 2 million dollar ransom. The twist and turns and chases in this book are great. I haven't read a lot of Koontz yet only like 4 or 5 books but this is right up there with Lightning. As usual with Koontz expect the unexpected, and even then you'll be surprised. Great story with great suspense, and as always he is the master of metaphors, you'll feel like your right there standing next to Mitch as he tracks down kidnappers. I usually only get to read for about an hour a day and I got thru this in about 4 days, I made time for this book, I had to know what was going to happen next.
Book Review: Good Koontz... not great Koontz Summary: 4 Stars
This book was good but it seemed to lack that certain something his older books had. The action is minimal at best. It seemed to me the hero of the tale didnt really do much struggling with the villians. They would either fall over and acidentally kill themselves or wreck their motorbike and die, leaving Mitch very stunned and ridiculously lucky.
At the end it was as if Koontz just got sick of writing the novel and finished it as fast as possible. It literally went from the abrupt end struggle to five years later and "They lived happily ever after".
Dont get me wrong, I liked it a lot and had I not read lots of Koontz before I would probably have givin this five stars, but his newer work just doesnt do as much for me as his classics. I would recommend this book. Its fun and enjoyable. Just dont expect Hideaway of Phantoms.
