Book Reviews of The Inflammation Syndrome: The Complete Nutritional Program to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, Arthritis, Diabetes, Allergies, and AsthmaBook Review: A Useful Resource, But Not Perfect Summary: 4 Stars
In this book, Challem describes the "inflammation syndrome," a condition of chronic inflammation which appears to contribute to and link a variety of diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, allergies, asthma, cancer, and many others.
Regarding treatment of these conditions, Challem describes the substantial side effects and risks associated with conventional anti-inflammatory drugs, and instead offers an alternative (or complementary) approach emphasizing diet and supplements. Based on other reading I've done and my personal health experiences, I believe that Challem's advice is generally sound. However, I have a few issues with the book which lower my rating to 4 stars:
1. The technical depth of the book is fairly limited. If you want to really understand the biology of the inflammation syndrome and the mechanisms by which diet and supplements act, so that you can apply your own judgment on a reasonably informed basis, you have to go beyond this book.
2. The information in the book is somewhat scattered and repetitive, especially with respect to recommended supplements and dosages. The book could be organized better and more simply, and should include more summaries of recommendations.
3. The summaries of studies often lack sufficient quantitative detail in terms of study designs, differences in efficacy between treated and control groups, p values, durations of benefits, etc. I appreciate the need to avoid overwhelming the general reader, but oversimplifying descriptions of studies is also a problem, since it increases the risk of misinterpretation.
4. Challem doesn't adequately describe the side effects and risks associated with supplements, including interactions with each other and with conventional medicines, especially when supplements are taken in relatively high doses. The point needs to be emphasized that supplements aren't entirely risk free, and therefore need to be used carefully.
5. Challem often doesn't provide sufficient details on how supplements should be taken with respect to taking them with or without food, number of times per day, etc.
Overall, I do certainly recommend this book as a useful resource for prevention and treatment of inflammation-related health problems. However, readers should be aware of the book's limitations, and should therefore plan to also utilize other books and the advice of their doctors and other health advisors. This book by itself isn't sufficient for a "do it yourself" approach to treating serious health conditions, and I don't advise that approach anyway.
Also keep in mind that this book was published in 2003, so some revisions to its recommendations may be warranted based on subsequent research findings.
