Book Review: Terrible

Do not invest in "The Investigators". If you've read any of W.E.B. Griffin's Badge of Honor group of novels - you've read 85% of this one, previously. If you know your Griffin, he has large numbers of characters in each book - well, they are all here in this one and by way of "reintroduction", Griffin gives a not so mini biography of each one again. Their education, their pecking order within the Philly Police Department, who likes whom, about their fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters. Who's sleeping with whom for several generations. Again, very typical of Griffin, the `main' players all drive snappy sports cars, everyone else drives a shiny Buick. The word "shiny" comes up a lot in a Griffin novel. Everyone, except the bad guys, have shiny cars. Everyone has "shiny" shoes - the main players have shiny loafers. Lots of loafers. No mention is made to the status of the bad guy's shoes - but one assumes they are scuffed. The story, what little there exists, is a variation of the "boy meets girl, loses, etc." The variation is "Amazingly dumb fair haired young hero, meets incredibly stupid girl and together do really stupid and illegal things. The only sympathetic characters in the book are the several waitresses and waiters who "overhear" the last few words of a sentence ending in "up in jail", "or dead" and flee to the safety of the kitchen, and the Mafia Don who plays the violin, has people doing vile and villainous things to people - So, you have the biographies, the shiny shoes, and everytime a character 'thinks or ponders' you get your pages of italicized type. Can't ask for much more than that. Griffin must be older than dirt or he researches very well. Every cliché ever used to either describe police/military work ("No rest for the virtuous.") or being in love/lust ("Be still my beating heart.") or sex ("Playing hide the salami."). Those and so many others are on virtually every page that isn't a biography of all the tired older characters of previous books, almost makes this a source book for stilted writing. Not only should you not buy this book, but if checked out at the library, do not, for Pet's sake, allow it to become overdue - the fee you will have to pay is a gross overpayment. Not that "they" would listen - but I suggest Griffin, his agent, and the publisher, Jove, every year or so when they need or would like more money - take out an advertisement that says "instead of inflicting another worthless effort.
