Book Reviews of The Kill: A Novel

Book Review: zero stars for not doing her homework
Summary: 3 Stars

I've now finished the book, but the bottom part of this review still applies.

This is a very average book. It's an easy read and the characters are likeable. But it isn't thrilling, you get to see what the killer is doing so there isn't any suspense and anything you don't see is pretty much predictable to someone who wasn't born yesterday. Later on I find that Ms. Brennan is also a romance writer. That explains the indepth detail in the several pages where the protagonists make love to each other. Yawn. If I want to read in loving detail how protagonists make love I'd be reading romance novels, not thrillers. OK, maybe I'm not the target audience. What is the target audience, maybe middle aged ladies who want a little romance with suspense. Heck, they can call me at (xxx) 555-5555 for that, and that'd be free too. Anywhoo, it's a so-so thriller, but it's easy to read and it's got a little romance in detail for those who want it. Those who really want it can call me......

Old review:
I dislike authors who don't do their homework and Ms. Brennan is apparently one of them. I'm only on page 20, but there are so many glaring mistakes in this book that I don't know if I can continue.

To start, and a word of advice to budding authors, do not base your book in a city you are not familiar with.

The body is found near Qwest Field (spelt wrong in the book). The witness works near there, goes to Seattle Central Comm. College, lives in a "walk-up" halfway between them, and bikes to work, home and school. That's a logistical impossibility. CCC is on a hill on the other side of I-5. There is no direct road between CCC and Qwest Field, you'd have to go through downtown, past the King County lock-up and some pretty bad parts of town to bike there, or you'd go south go through the International District (ID) and back "up" to Qwest Field.

And there are no "walk-ups" 1/2 between these 2 places. "Walk up" is a regional term not used in Seattle, just like NY have brownstones, Seattle has condos. There is some low income housing in the ID and nowadays newer condos which our witness couldn't afford, and some low income hotel housing just a little north of ID.

Someone who'd insist on commuting would probably live near CCC on Capitol Hill where there is some housing for student types (duh!) and take a bus. The main bus terminal is right next to Qwest Field.

2ndly: The witness works in a company which refurbishes and sells used printers. This book is published in 2006. In 2006, printers are almost disposables. Printer companies make their money selling ink. You can buy a new fax/scanner/printer combo for $150. And a printer isn't just a stand alone piece of hardware, you need software to go with it. You need to make sure you have the installation software and all the new drivers that would be compatible with new computers that come out every year. It would cost you a lot more to ensure compatibility with any new operation system than that old junk printer is worth. There just isn't any money in refurbishing printers.

Having ascertained that Ms. Brennan does not know anything about Seattle or printers so far, I'm going to have to assign this book to the bathroom library where any patron is likely going to be a captive audience and have no choice but to soldier on.

Summary of The Kill: A Novel

Her worst nightmare brought back to life, she risks everything for a second shot at justice.

For thirty years, FBI scientist Olivia St. Martin has lived with guilt and one abiding certainty?that while she wasn?t able to save her sister?s life, she did testify and helped to convict the rapist and killer. When shocking new evidence exonerates the man Olivia is sure she saw abduct her sister, she breaks every rule in the book to uncover the truth.

Driven by the possibility that she put the wrong man behind bars, Olivia discovers that a serial killer has been at large all these years. Believing that the monster has just struck again in Seattle, Olivia leaves her lab and poses as a field agent, sharing her unofficial investigation with a hardworking Seattle cop. Olivia doesn?t want to lie to detective Zack Travis. And she certainly doesn?t want to fall in love. But as the investigation intensifies, Olivia and Zack find that they?re rapidly losing control?over their hearts, their secrets, and a case that threatens to consume them.
