Book Reviews of The Killer AngelsBook Review: A Wonderful Read Summary: 5 Stars
I was a history buff long before I read The Killer Angels several years ago. I think in this day and age, its important to look back at our history as Americans and appreciate everything we have and remember why we have it. Joshua Chamberlain is an important American figure, but many people have no idea who he was or what he did in his lifetime. The Battle of Gettysberg is a milestone in American history, and Michael Shaara did an excellent job in bringing the reader closer to understanding this battle and its importance. It is a fairly easy book to read, and highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the Civil War or American history.
Book Review: Excellent Historical Novel Summary: 5 Stars
And excellent integration of historical fact with a novel which makes for a very good read for anyone interested in the Civil War and the personalities that fought it. Special attention is given to the top members of the Confederate and Union armies command structure as well as the enlisted men and their reasons for fighting this war which remain topics of debate even now. The book centers on the battle of Gettysburg which I have visited several times in Pennsylvania and the author brings to live that battle in no other way by any other author in an authentic way which will capture the imagination of any Civil War buff.
Book Review: More than names and numbers Summary: 5 Stars
I am a Cadet Candidate at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School. For far too long, the Battle of Gettysburg remained nothing to me but names and numbers in a history book. After reading The Killer Angels, I gained a whole new perspective on the events of that battle. Names now have faces, actions have background, and I understand thelong and tedious process each decision had. The characters have voices, from which I can learn lessons from the past. As a student of military strategy and leadership, as well as a veteran, I view this book as a true exhibition of duty, honor, and patriotism.
Book Review: One of the greatest historical war novels ever? Summary: 5 Stars
One of the greatest historical war novels ever?
I was so moved by this novel that I wanted to read everything else written by Mr. Shaara. In 60 years of "bookish" reading of thousands of books and magazines, this book stands out: It's presently in my "Top 100". I would enjoy re-reading it.
Most highly recommended. The quality of the writing is wonderful, the tragic and heroic stories and lessons from this battle are most worthwhile, and in my opinion Mr. Shaara richly deserved the Pulitzer Prize awarded to him.
Book Review: The Killer Angels Summary: 5 Stars
This is a must read for history lovers. While the book is not literally true in all aspects, I believe Shaara captures the spirit of the characters and provides the reader with a look into a brutal, unforgiving and heroic period of our nation's history. If you like this novel, move on to Shaara's son Jeff's companion pieces, Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure. Jeff also wrote books on the the Mexican-American, Revolutionary and both World Wars. Enjoy the whole set, but The Killer Angels is the keystone.
