Book Review: Crimes galore
Summary: 4 Stars
Hard to believe so many crimes could arise in one small village. But Caroline Graham has an ingenious plot that justifies the carnage.
An eighty-year-old lady dies, presumably because her time is up. But her equally ancient friend, Miss Bellringer, maintains that dear Emily was strong as a horse. Something must be wrong.
Although Miss Bellringer is an avid reader of detective fiction, which may explain her suspicions, the conscientious Chief Inspector Barnaby looks into the matter closely. His investigations uncover all sorts of unsavory activity in this quiet corner of rural England.
This is the first Inspector Barnaby mystery, and Graham gives her detective an amiable wife whose terrible cooking keeps Barnaby's stomach in a constant state of distress. Barnaby's other characteristics are intelligence and an inquiring mind. I'm not sure these qualities are enough to make him an immortal among fictional detectives. I find Barnaby a bit bland.
I also find some of the villagers to be caricatures rather than characters. Nonetheless, Graham is certainly quite competent at mystery writing. Many readers will love her, but I'm not sure I'll continue with the series.
