Book Reviews of The Landmark Herodotus: The Histories

Book Review: The Landmark Herodotus
Summary: 5 Stars

An inspiring work for all us amateur historians.

The translation is intelligent yet conversational, like sitting in front of a great storyteller (which is what Herodotus truly was). The side notes are helpful for search purposes, and the footnotes, photos, numerous maps and illustrations provide the modern-world connection to this ancient text.

I had heard this was a comprehensive edition, and I was not disappointed. But what is a pleasant surprise is how useful and usable this edition is.

One wishes all histories were organized this way--it shows that true interactivity doesn't need a computer.

Book Review: Worthy!
Summary: 5 Stars

The new landmark series definitely makes things a lot easier for those who want to enter into classics but feel that the regular books can be quite loaded with notes but vague on the various geographic issues. This is filled with maps on every page and notes here and there to help guide the reader along without needing to flip back and forth between the front and back to see them. Not to mention that it is filled with a wide ranging number of articles that deal with almost every aspect of herodotus' histories.

Book Review: dream come true
Summary: 5 Stars

The Landmark Herodotus is a book I wanted but didn't know it existed. I tried to read Herodotus once and found it difficult to read because of his many references to places that no longer exist. This edition has extensive maps, references and background material that make Herodotus not only much more accessable, but also fun and a joy to read! I love this book! It's like The Lord of the Rings but better because it's real (mostly). I would highly recommend this book and give it as a gift to people I care about.

Book Review: Can you say WOW!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been working through The Well-Educated Mind by Susan Wise-Bauer, and I have been dreading this big volume of Herodotus. I stumbled upon this edition in the library, and what a great find! It has maps, explanatory footnotes, summaries of each paragraph along the margins, pictures of archaelogical sights, and more! The translation is wonderfully readable too.

I heartily recommend this version!

Book Review: Good read as well as a useful reference.
Summary: 4 Stars

The main thing I like about this book is that the translation is pretty good. There are some dreadful versions of Herodotus out there.

I have only one tiny quibble, the repetition of footnotes every time a subject is mentioned. I understand this is useful if you're opening the book at random. But I found the umpteenth repetition of, e.g., the definition of guest-friend a bit irritating
