Book Reviews of The Last Colony

Book Review: Thoughtful conclusion to a strong series
Summary: 4 Stars

This, for me, was a return to the strengths of Old Man's War. Perry is an easy character to root for, when he begins to question the nature and motives of the Colonial Union. Moral questions abound, along with the nature of loyalty. The general of the Conclave fleet is an ambiguous villain, with some of the same dilemmas as Perry. There are some very moving sequences, along with lighter moments, and some action mixed in. This is a very balanced novel, just as the first in the series was.

Book Review: Decent series wrap-up
Summary: 4 Stars

OK, I'm ignoring Zoe's, but that' more of a parallel book - not a prequel or sequel. This was more of a "behind the scenes" of the politics, back-stabbing, interspecies version of Congress.... There was not as much action as the previous two books, but it was a good series wrap-up.

It's not a good book to start the series with - that would be either of the first two. But if you have read the previous two books - read this one.

Book Review: Exciting, and fun to read.
Summary: 4 Stars

This last installment of the "Old Man's War" trilogy has John Perry retired and, along with his wife and daughter, responsible for "The Last Colony". The story develops nicely with twists and turns that keep you wondering what could possibly happen next, then it happens, and it all makes perfect sense. I found it exciting, fun to read, and difficult to put down. I've become a fan of Mr. Scalzi and can't wait for his next book.

Book Review: Completing a trilogy
Summary: 3 Stars

I liked the first of the series this book is the third in (Old Man's War) while thinking it a bit light. But the second (The Ghost Brigades) is wonderful - a well paced, plotted and interesting trip into the Universe introduced in Old Mans War.

But this third book doesn't live up to The Ghost Brigades. It's entertaining but not as creative or engaging and ends with a complete deus ex machina solution.

Book Review: The best of the group
Summary: 5 Stars

For my time and money, I think "The Last Colony" is his best work since "The A Dream" It had everything. Action, great great diaolgue, and wonderful political cloke and dagger. It is true that I did not like Zoe's Tale quite as much but between this and "METAtropolist" (is that right?, I don't have it in front of me)I am going to be a fan until he proves otherwise. Well done John!!
