Book Review: The Way It Was When We Were Fighting To Win

I have been fascinated with the Battle Off Samar since I was a wee child many decades ago.I remember looking at the rows of DE's sitting at Green Cove Springs,thinking how small they looked and imagining the Sammy B going up against the mountains of Japanese metal.I couldn't picture it.Years later I saw Adm.Copeland as an elderly community icon in Tacoma and marveled.I've only spent any noticable amount of time on one WWII era ship,the 886.They could have used a few of those bigger Gearing boats that day.But walking the passageways,going up and down,smelling the smells,I tried to put myself back in time with those men who did what we can not imagine.I couldn't really take it all in or get my mind around all that happened that day.The battle is one of the miracles of WWII,along with Midway,but as a previous writer mentioned,it is not well-known as it should be.If the enemy fleet had run through,disposing of Taffy 3,as they should have done;on to the invasion ships,slaughtering the transports and their troops-THE MIND BOGGLES.We owe a lot to those heros that day.As the survivors of the great crusade die by the thousands each day,we need to honor them while we can and never forget.Then wonder,could we do that today?Judging from the performance of our people in harms way today,yes.(If ted,Nancy,John,Howard,leave them alone)I have two sons in Iraq today and know the quality of our armed forces.
